This Year's Model Updates:

The speedy 1.8T four-door has been eliminated from the Golf lineup. A CD player now comes standard on the GLS model, and the GL trim level is available both in two- and four-door configurations. Mojave Beige joins the color spectrum. Also new for the 2002 model year, all Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun-to-drive, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility.
Cons:
  • Limited engine choices with departure of 1.8T four-door, some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

  • A great car - dont expect performance - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

The Golf is a really super car. My Tdi is my third VW in about 10 years and my second MkIV Golf, my first being a turbo GTI. The tdi is an excellent engine, with great torque, smooth performance and a great sound. Expect longer warm-up times (get heated seats) and rough running when cold. Understand that diesel engines are different creatures than gas engines; to get the reliability and durability diesels are known for, be ready to religiously replace filters, buy good diesel, use additives and be a hands-on driver. The diesels are by no means drive and forget, similar to Jap cars. tdiclub.com!

This is a fun to drive, very economical and reliable car. Its hatchback style converts the trunk into a huge cargo area relative to the size of the vehicle.

  • I love this car - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Ive been looking at cars for over 4 months, test driving dozens of models and researching them thoroughly. I pretty much decided against getting a new car because nothing I drove impressed me. That was until I test drove the Golf. This car put a serious smile on my face when I drove it and equally important, it was the only car that seemed solidly built (for under 30K) and just had an air of quality that the others lacked. The interior materials are particulary well done.

  • Great Little Driving Machine - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Im hooked on German Engineering. The way my Golf handles still amazes me. Wethor driving on slick roads, ice, or sharp turns, my car effortlessly careens me thru. This handling EATS tires so make sure you ROTATE. The interior design is also awsome. The color of the dashboard lights, the placement of controls, the seat pattern design and the chrome extras all make up an impressive look that is always complimented when someone gets in my car. Interior hardware not so good. Visor lights, side view mirror and seat handles all broke within first month.Gas milage is just ok.

  • Just read the Lemon Law!!! - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

If you have any recurrent problems with your car you should just read the Lemon Law in your state. Mainly it says if it had 4 unsuccessful repairs for a serious defect/safety defect or it spent more than 30 days in service, no matter if finally repaired or not, the law gives you the right to ask VW of America to repurchase or replace your car. Yeah, thats true, your money back minus some offset mileage and you can buy another one. Just stay away of VW next time. They are SOOOOO POOR at customer support. You dont want to get another car with problems from them. Just read the Lemon Law! Its that simple. And next time, dont buy a VW!

  • This car helped save my son! - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

I just wanted to let everyone know that this little car saved my sons life! He was doing about 45 mph and ran a stop sign late at night due to fog, he went airborn into a field where he it a 8" round tree. The air bags deployed. The only injury he got was a scrape on is face from the airbag and a passenger had a sore shoulder. The car held up well even though it was totaled...It really didnt look that bad, I expected worse! Thank you Volkswagen for making such a nice, solid car....

    great pocket rocket

  • Two years later - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

Very good car, no engine or electrical gremlins to date. In two years, the following warranty repairs have occurred: Exterior window seals replaced twice on both doors; right headlamp broke inside, replaced whole assembly; window regulators changed to updated metal clips; Monsoon radio changed (known problem on 2002); front end chirp noise over broken pavement, manhole covers, etc. Dealer cannot find problem and Ive paid an independent shop to inspect front end. May be brake caliper components, but Im not spending more money to have it diagnosed and dealer cannot find anything wrong. The numerous rattles do take away from the overall driving experience

  • Best hatchback for the buck - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

My 4 door Golf GL with 5 speed transmission is one of the best purchases I have ever made. The attention to detail in the exterior and the interior is amazing. Everything is very well made and durable. I only have 400 miles on it so far, but the gas milage is already superb. The hatchback design is very useful, and the two extra doors in the back really provide extra utility. Looks and feels way more expensive than it is. People who sit in it dont believe me when I tell them it only cost me $15,095 (before tax of course). If you are considering a focus, civic, lancer or the like I urge you to test drive one of these.

  • Poor choice - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

I realize we made a bad decision buying this car without having our mechanic look at it. We bought it with 135,000 miles and drove it for a year. It chugged oil with no visible leaks. In the 12 months we replaced the key/ignition $300, both headlights $20 each, transmission $2200, wheel bearing $300, tires $1000, 1 of the alignment control bars $150, dipstick tube $45, and AC compressor $900. It failed emissions after all this and then a lady ran a red light and totalled it for us. Thank you lady. Put the thing out of its misery.
