This Year's Model Updates:

The speedy 1.8T four-door has been eliminated from the Golf lineup. A CD player now comes standard on the GLS model, and the GL trim level is available both in two- and four-door configurations. Mojave Beige joins the color spectrum. Also new for the 2002 model year, all Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun-to-drive, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility.
Cons:
  • Limited engine choices with departure of 1.8T four-door, some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

  • Awesome diesel (TDI) - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Great driving car. Smooth over bumps, good bit of body lean in turns but feels very sure footed. Torque makes you feel like youre driving a much more powerful car. Highway ride is a nice, tracks straight (autobahn heritage), eats up twisty roads, steering feels great. We traded in a 6mo. old Civic. Civic was roomier, better basic transport. But for a fun refined driving machine, this is it!

Finding fuel can be a hassle if you do not live or travel on a highway. Gas mileage has been about 33 miles to the gallon. I was hoping for somewhat better. Stated is 34 - 45. The design is almost perfect in relation to form and function.

  • Get one if you can - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

We bought this car new, after the dealer went high and low trying to find one. It has 175000 miles on it and is by far the lowest-cost joy of a car we have ever owned. Going for 300,000+! Only the two-seat Honda Insight tops it for freeway-driving economy and this has no multi-thousand- dollar battery battery bank overhauls looming in the future!

  • Excellent Car! - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Sporty, fun to drive, economical, great looking, and useful! This car has a huge trunk/hatch area that will haul lots of stuff, the rear doors make getting in and out of the back seats easy - easier than the Jetta. The drivers seat is comfortable and supportive. Driving position is great. Visibility is good but the pillar between the front and back seats sometimes blocks your vision. Monsoon Stereo sounds fabulous and I love the sunroof, also. Believe it or not, I love driving to work every day in this car! The sporty little TDI engine is very peppy and strong, and will definitely surprise you. I average 43MPG all city driving. Car feels like a quality product. No cheap plastic here.

  • Fuel economy is one of many good things! - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Bought with 28K on it, have put over 10K on it in last 6 months. Have had no problems whatsoever. Great looking inside and out, always draws second glances. Interior sets the standard for cars of this class and has perfect ergonomics. Seats are comfy if maybe a bit tiring on long trips. Good sound system. Performance more than adequate; wont leave sports cars behind but if you punch the gas pedal it pushes you back in your seat. Excellent fuel economy, about 500 miles/tank in city, 600 in highway; more with manual. Theres pride in owning a TDI and an unspoken bond among fellow owners. Dealer service isnt the best (so Ive heard) but it wont be in there much if you take care of it.

  • not up to par - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

within weeks of purchase, i brought the car in for warranty work. the lights would not flash when arming or disarming the alarm. service said that a fuse was missing. second time was for annoying passenger side doors creaks and rattles. service replaced rear door weather seal and both front doors plastic window clips. creaking and rattling still audible. overall, its an ok car.

  • HIGH fuel economy+LOW quality=Little fun - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

I bought this car because of TDI engine and fuel economy. Worst car I have ever owned. 26K miles and more than 7 dealer visits! check engine lights, rattles and squeaks, moldy smell from AC after 1000 miles. Rough running engine-idle could not be fixed to date. Too much body roll. Buy this car only if you drive a lot and need the 45+ mpg fuel economy and dont care about crisp handling. Low interior build quality level (rattles and squeaks). If you live in cold climates, beware: heater doesn’t produce significant heat until about 5-10 miles of driving due to very efficient engine. Too small for child seats.

We tested numerous cars when deciding to purchase my wifes 2001 Volkswagen Golf TDI. After driving hers several times I knew I wanted one just like it. I drive 38 miles to work each day and the car handles great, is quiet, has lots of pep, and I get around around 49 MPG if I keep my foot out of it. I ordered the Monsoon radio package and I have had problems with reception but the sound is spot on. Ive been waiting for the 06 Golf TDI but it now looks like June of 06 before we get the new body style. You can see new body style Golfs by Googleing New Golf. Try not to drool on yourself. I have seen one here that was brought back to the states by a guy in the Air Force. Unlike 06 Jetta, the new Golf looks excellent!

  • Look elsewhere - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

I bought this VW for quality German engineering. My mistake. It had chronic (monsoon) radio/cd problems which are expensive to repair. Front door windows fell out but were covered by mfr recall. Transmission went out twice (112,000 and 128,000 miles). It cost $4500 and VW America would not help with either transmission. Even the wheel logos are poorly installed and fall out at $40 each. Cup holders completely block access to stereo while in use. Black velour seats tend to hold lots of lint and dirt. Looking forward to selling this car and buying a Japanese or American car.
