Overview & Reviews
The speedy 1.8T four-door has been eliminated from the Golf lineup. A CD player now comes standard on the GLS model, and the GL trim level is available both in two- and four-door configurations. Mojave Beige joins the color spectrum. Also new for the 2002 model year, all Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.
- Fun-to-drive, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility.
- Limited engine choices with departure of 1.8T four-door, some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

Less room, more fun... - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
By audiPhile - September 20 - 2:00 amI picked my new 2002 Golf GLS yesterday. I bought it 3 days ago for $15,200 without the taxes and extended warranty ($900 extra for 7 year, 75 K miles with road side assistance). Im an Audi fan, and had an old Audi before I decided to buy a new car. But I had to stick to the $16,000 range as Im getting married. The Corolla, Civic and Sentra were possible choices. All these cars had similar seating space except that the rear leg room for the golf is smaller by an inch. But the golf has a bigger cargo area.

Stylish and cheap - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
By Diego - July 16 - 12:40 amSince I bought the car I had a great experience using a VW product. The car drives excellent, has a great steering sensation, not so much power but with the 5 speed tranny still gets a good speed. Brakes and shocks had a great feeling, and the fuel economy is great, even with the A/C on, and the equipment is fine. Changed engine due to flooding, but any other major problem

My 2nd update. - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
By 2fastdre - June 23 - 2:00 amI put another 16K miles on my TDI since we last spoke and I am still happy (although I did go through 2 unpleasant experiences). I had the front window problem: well, my window basically fell into the door when I was going about 70mph on the highway. The linkage broke (as VW vaguely warned) and nothing was holding it in place. They replaced both linkages with no questions. I had an EGR problem: the car would not start one morning - it would crank but no fire. Had to tow to dealer and they had to replace the EGR valve. For detailed info on EGR go to tdiclub website, but it basically got stuck in an open position and it prevented oxygen from entering. Warranty is great.

GOLF - Simply awesome - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
By Hogan Jr. - May 10 - 10:00 amI considered the Focus, Saturn, Civic, and Sentra before I finally settled on my Golf. Dont let the 115 HP fool you. Its got some umph!! The Golf feels like it should be $5,000 more than it costs. The Monsoon sounds great and the Indiglo Blue looks great. Heated seats, washers, and mirrors will be nice come December. Crash data an added plus.

review - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
By Bpugac2925 - May 10 - 10:00 amVW should close its faxtory in Mexico. Too many problems with VW Golf GLS 2.0 Ring job (At 18000 miles to reduce oil cosumtion), passenger power window (twice), headlight, poor gas mileage (should do 33-35 on highway), Great expectations, poor reality.

Japanese for me - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
By No Good - February 9 - 2:00 amJust like all of the other reviews here on Edmunds - drives and looks great with poor build quality and reliability (2002 model). In two years I have had it to the shop 7 times, including 1 tow. Lots of rattles from the dash and vents, broken radio and window motor, frozen doors (it snows/rains in Germany, right?), wouldnt shift out of park so I needed a tow to the dealer and now I have noticed the burning oil at 27K (smells like a 2-cycle motor the first 10 sec after starting in the cold). Average 24mpg with 70% highway driving.
