This Year's Model Updates:

The speedy 1.8T four-door has been eliminated from the Golf lineup. A CD player now comes standard on the GLS model, and the GL trim level is available both in two- and four-door configurations. Mojave Beige joins the color spectrum. Also new for the 2002 model year, all Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun-to-drive, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility.
Cons:
  • Limited engine choices with departure of 1.8T four-door, some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

  • Best car ever, so happy I bought it - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

First of all, I love this car. Second, its worth every penny. I got it at a great price AND the fuel economy is great. I just bought it last night but still, Ive never driven a car like this in my life. Ive driven quite a bit and the gas tank gauge still hasnt moved, I might have to get that checked. I think I might fill up my tank in October or so. The stock sound system is great. Even though its a deisel engine its much quiter than probably all others. Its very smooth and so fun to drive. The test drive made me fall in love. 90 hp my butt! This thing has the power too! Acceleration is wonderful! Sun roof is sweet. E-mail me with any questions!

The car is OK to drive, but it needs more power. The inside lights are nice and the comfort of the ride is not to bad.

  • AWESOME VALUE FOR THE $ - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

This is my 4th VW. I had two 97s and a 99 Jetta. Build quality is exceptional, materials are pure German. I added 16inch BBS Wolfsberg wheels and tires for much improved handling. I have always been a huge fan of the GTI but for value reasons I chose the GL. The GTI offers much sportier engine and suspension but it was not worth the additional $3700. Standard features are abundant. I love this little box..

  • Really happy with my first VW - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

This is my first exp. owning a VW and I am very pleased so far. This car is deceivingly roomy, esp. in the trunk. My Golf is so much fun to drive and its great on gas mileage ( I always use midgrade gas, that seems to make a difference). I have had no problems with the service department, actually they have been very helpful. The only problems weve encountered so far are the doors freezing shut in the winter. The door seals on both front doors were ripped/broken in the process of trying to pry the doors open. Service dept. has taken care of this with no charge.

  • Nimble City Car for a single person - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

Bought the 00 model (Germany not Mexico). The power steering belt had to be replaced after 1k miles. Stohlman vw in Virgina gave me a great price, but service dept is incompetent (been going to their competitor in DC, which is great!). The engine had to be retuned (factory recall) recently. Great low-end torque and body size for living in the city. Noisy engine on the highway (would prefer the 1.8t). Rear seats are cramped and often have to fold down for golf clubs. The shifter isnt the smoothest, but better than the auto. If you want a nimble sports hatch, this is it.

  • Great Ecomomy Car - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

This is the first new car I have owned, and for the most part I have been very happy with it. My only complaints are associated with the build quality, and the electronic features. I had 3 warranty repairs (glow plug wireing, airbag wire harness, rear windsheild wiper wireing). Do you see a trend? The Monsoon stereo stopped working, and I had a glow plug go bad. Total spend to date on repairs, just over $200. I still love this car, despite its little problems. You really cant beat it with anything in its class.

  • Great Car - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

I like to drive. I have 155k on a late 2002. It is still running and looking great. I have had no major issues with the car; it is he best car I have owned!

  • Good Golf - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

I purchased this car new for long distance commuting (170 m. one way) and at 3000m it was nearly totaled. The VW dealer put is back together and it has been a great car. It is quick, comfortable economical and reliable. It now has 130,000 miles and is a superb automobile.

  • Forget Jetta, the Golf is the bomb - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

I got a 2002 GLS this month, and I am extremely happy about it. I looked at Mazda Protege 5, Hyundai and Ford Focus. I purchased the car primarily for long weekend trips. Here is why the car is the best choice: 1.Cheapest Insurance rate 2.Good Power 3. Superior features for its price point (none of the competitors have 6 airbags, abs, power everything, immobilizer, anti theft and day time running lights)4.Low depreciation 5.V. Large trunk (larger than Jettas) and you can haul everything when you put the seats down. 6.Increasing popularity (sales increasing)7.Safest car in its class My advise, test drive all the competitors and see for yourself.
