This Year's Model Updates:

The speedy 1.8T four-door has been eliminated from the Golf lineup. A CD player now comes standard on the GLS model, and the GL trim level is available both in two- and four-door configurations. Mojave Beige joins the color spectrum. Also new for the 2002 model year, all Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun-to-drive, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility.
Cons:
  • Limited engine choices with departure of 1.8T four-door, some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

I test drove my brothers 2001 VW golf and loved it and decided to get a 2002 gls golf. Within the first year of having it i have had a lot of minor probs: all 4 doors completely freeze shut if there is freezing rain/snow, making me climb through the trunk and do power kicks to open them (and i am no weakling either), i had a faulty air intake boot clamp causing my car to completly stop running at rush hour on a highway exit ramp, an ABS recall, and lots of extra noises.

Bought my Golf GLS 5M on the last of Year 2001, now have 6000 miles on the odo. Great performance, beating many sport cars at the stop lights. Lots of fun to drive and good value for the money. The car did have some minor problems, I got three parts changed under warranty and one recall. So far satisfied with the purchase.

Read all the negative reviews you want: this car is phenomenal for the price range. Sure there are the small problems (windows falling in doors, etc) but the warranty covers them all...buy it used, chances are the problems have already occured and been fixed. The car looks great, the interior feels like a high end model, and it is a blast to drive this lil guy. The monsoon sound system is great and all the interior goodies are awesome. I bought this with a little over $30,000, and man, it still feels brand new and a good amount of the warranty still remains. Highly recommend.

I just purchased the gls a month ago and it truly is an incredibly fun car to drive. I love everything about it: the interior design, the blue and red lights, the stereo, huge cargo space, 8 airbags, abs breaks etc etc. The new 4 year warranty is great too. The handling is amazing and it definitely feels and looks like a more expensive car. I had a strange, albeit minor glitch the first week when my alarm started going off by itself at random times whenever i locked the doors. The dealer looked at it, and were a bit perplexed, but think it had to do with the starter (which they replaced). I still am not sure, but hopefully that will be my only problem with the car.

  • Love my TDI - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Ive owned a VW Golf GLS TDI for four years and I have to say that it just may turn out to be the best car I ever owned. Ill let you know when it hits the 1/2 million mile mark, thats when I will be 100% sure. It has had no problems at all. Its quick, fun to drive, handles well, and gets great gas mileage, 50+ MPG! I first saw one in Ireland in 2002 while visiting. I was glad t hat I had this car when gas hit $3,00+ per gallon. I live in the northeast and have not had any cold weather problems, and you dont plug them in. They have a glow plug system that works. The car has no smoke and very little engine cabin noise. Buy one!

  • Think Twice - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

My cars "control module" (read: brain) malfunctioned about 5 months into my purchase and I was quickly enmeshed in the most bitter customer service battle of my life. The car was cutting out on hills (a problem in San Francisco) and I was made to feel like a hysterical idiot because the dealer (not Lithia) could not diagnose the problem. They promised to pay all my rental car costs (about 5 weeks worth) but only paid for a fracion in the end. Also: other cruise control stopped working, window failed and consistent rattle (from shoddy finish and the vibration from the deisel). Also, the felt-type upholstery is a lint magnet.

My dad had a Rabbit diesel and that car provided about a million miles and years of service so I had my eye on this Golf when I first saw it. I got it with 60k miles and it now has 100k miles. It is 6 years old but still looks great, and the brake pads have never been changed! It gets about 36 mpg which is right with what the window sticker says. This is a low maintenance car, all I do is change the oil around 5k miles and drive it.

  • Very Sad - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

I loved my Golf up until this past August when the car hit 35k miles. The car has been the shop 3 times since then with electrical issues. Two of the trips required towing. First, the brake light switch went out and caused the car to reduce power and then it could not be shifted out of park. Next the fuel relay went bad and drained my battery. Could not jump the car, had to be towed again. Now the dash lights come on randomly on their own in damp weather. Dealer has no clue why its doing this. I love the looks of the car and driving the car. But I am afraid once its out of warranty I will be dumping tons of money into it. I had planned on keeping this car a long time but now Im unsure

This car has been one of the best cars I have ever owned. Being 52 years old Ive owned 6 other vehicles in my lifetime, and this one handles exceptionally well, has very adequate seating room and cargo room, has as much power as many gas powered vehicles, and gets 45 miles to a gallon. VW has done a great job for a very reasonable price!

I have put 19,000 miles on this car in the five months since purchasing it and have no complaints. Peppy, comfortable, expensive looking materials, complete lack of problems and great fuel economy.
