This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

Outstanding car in all respects. My wife drives it often and wants one for herself. My 15 year old son also likes to drive it. Our family is disappointed if we have to take our minivan or truck instead of the Prius. Easy to drive, excellent technology features, plenty of room, wonderful gas mileage.

It is a car that you enjoy driving it. It is comfortable, plenty of space inside. The mileage that it gives you is great. The model I own is a black color Prius and the interior is in a very light beige leather and it looks luxurious. I highly recommend this car.

  • Great Gas Mileage - 2005 Toyota Prius

Gas savings depends on miles driven & driving style. The Prius multiples the benefits of the known gas saving tips. What I think is the best feature in the Prius is the display of what engine (electric or gas) is running, if the battery is charging, what’s your MPG all in real time. I play it like a video game and add up the points. Last summer I averaged 65 mpg for my 60 miles a day commute. Tips like slower speed driving saves gas, when I’m driving under 40 mph I’m using only the electric engine (unless going up hill). The display shows MPG used for slow steady starts vs 0 to 60 starts. Whenever I coast or go down hill the gas engine turns off & the battery starts changing, like making gas.

  • Car of 2004 America & Car of 2005 EUROPE - 2005 Toyota Prius

Absolutely EXCELLENT! Car of 2004 in N America & Car of 2005 in Europe! YES! enjoy every minute driving this hi-tech jewel! (And other drivers peeping and pointing with their finger toward my new Prius!) Coming from Toyota RAV4, I found turning visibility a little obstructed by bottom corners of the front windshield. Also too bad those Edmund editors forget that Prius is a midsize sedan and comes with full side airbags …. (!) – HM! Why is that? Where is the verticality and credibility of Edmunds.com? Should I contact the Better Business Bureau or the managers?

Easy to drive, great mileage - 50mpg, fun to use screens tracking actual mileage and engine useage, hatchback very large, seats fold easily

  • What a great Car! - 2005 Toyota Prius

We just love our Prius. We can get 51 mpg on a whole tank just by paying attention of when to lay off the gas pedal. Other times ONLY 46 mpg. Still better than that gas-hog of an SUV we used to drive. Plus were making a stand (as we all should start doing) to stop the insanity of our dependence on oil.

Overall this is a marvelous automobile. Absolutely love it and will probably exchange my 2004 for a 2006 model, selling my 2004 for more than I paid for it!!

  • Great Car! - 2005 Toyota Prius

I have had my Prius for about 6 months and I am nothing but pleased. I have not found that it has less power than other sedans because of the high amount of torque, I can burn rubber just about any time if I really wanted to do so. Also, in terms of the real-world driving, it is on par with 90% of cars that real world only get about 80-90% of the estimates. It just seems to be bigger because you see a bigger difference in 20% of 60 than 20% of 30. My lifetime MPG is slightly over 45, but this is from driving less than five minutes during colder temps. When we have done 20 min trips or longer, we average 50-55 mpg. I would buy another if I could afford it!

  • Fun and reliable vehicle - 2005 Toyota Prius
    By -

My 2005 Toyota Prius is the most fun to drive, best fuel economy (45-50 mpg) of real world driving that I have ever owned. The vehicle has a 1.5L gasoline engine along with 2 electric motors. This combination provides smooth rapid acceleration. The engines are quiet and vibration free. Controls are conveniently placed, most being duplicated with push buttons on the steering wheel. The interior is suprisingly large. With the rear seats folded down cargo hauling capability is like a small SUV. If you buy the Prius please carefully read the owners manual as the vehicle has some distinctive features different from other cars. The smart key sysem is very convenient. Test drive first.

We got this car because of the advertised gas mileage. We checked out both Honda and Toyota hybirds. This one was rated higher. The mileage is great. We took a trip to Forida right after we got it and averaged about 50 miles on the first tank on the trip. We then got 55 on the way back. It is smooth to drive and pick up is there when you need it. We now get 50 mpg or better and only fill the tank every 2 weeks and that is with 5.5 to 6 gallons. Sure alot cheaper than our other cars.
