This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • Pleased in every way - 2005 Toyota Prius

After much research and soul searching, we purchased an 04 Prius in November of 03. It was love at first drive. A 2300 mile trip from Gulfport MS to Key West Fla confirmed our first impressions. We were less tired than we were in the same trip in my wifes town car, and had much more money for fun instead of for gasoline. We now have 18000 miles on the car and have average 48 mpg to our delight. Thank you Toyota. Wake up, U.S. companies.

If you can tolerate slow acceleration, the Prius is a great car. In warmer weather mine can get 50+ mpg on a tank of gas after 117,000 miles. I have only replaced a water pump and tires during regular 5K service intervals. I have driven 400 averaging 60 mph and it still gets 43 mpg! The Prius struggles in very hilly areas but if you are patient you can make up for it on the downhill. It even handles well with the set of Michelins that are on it now.

  • You cant have mine..... - 2005 Toyota Prius

Saw on CNN the other day, that a fellow was buying Prius and selling them for more than he paid. Well dude, you cant have mine, I love it! I traded in my Ford F350 Super Duty, because it wouldnt fit into my newly built homes garage. What a blessing!!! Of course I dont act like I am macho when the guys next to me rev their engines, but I smile everytime I gas up. Driving to my other home, 135 miles away and back, used to cost me about a hundred bucks in gas. Now I am paying about thirteen dollars.

  • Prius: Engineering at its finest. - 2005 Toyota Prius

You have heard of the Shinkensen....the Bullet train? Well the same minds, somewhat further advanced from that technology, have produced a vehicle of exquisite refinement. Other cars I now own are the Volvo 850, Infiniti 35FX, and Porsch Boxster. All fine vehicles, but this one excels from the point of near-perfection and driving pleasure. I Would have bought it if it only got 20 mph after my test drive; but at 47mpg... hot damn! Negative is the rear bumpers which are scratchable in parking dings. Overall, a perfect 9.5 from me.

  • the best car Ive ever owned - 2005 Toyota Prius

My Prius is the best car Ive ever owned. I love its peppy feel, comfortable ride, roomy interior. Most of all, I love the 45-50 mpg Im getting. And I even enjoy the looks I get from other drivers, and questions from people about the car... I love bragging about it.

My husband first had his Prius arrive in 11/05, I signed on the list and received my Prius in 4/06. I got rid of a Mercury Grand Marquis to get this car, and was pleased to find how comfortable and useful it is. The space in the car is amazing. We camp, and find we can fit all of our equipment easily into a Prius. The ride is pretty hard, but you get used to it. Handling is very tight, there is no play in the steering wheel. There is plenty of power for passing, with both the gas and electric engines engaged. We get about 47 miles to the gallon overall; we live in an area where there are hills and ski slopes. When stuck in a traffic jam, it is calming to hear your gas engine go off.

  • Prius Pride - 2005 Toyota Prius

We are proud to own a Prius since it answers part of the oil supply and the global warming growing crises. The instrumentation and human engineering are supurb and quicky help train a driver for maximum fuel economy. We are now considering a second Prius. I only wish that Toyota would add rack and pinion steering for better wind stability. A larger battery with plug-in capability should be added for the next generation!

lots of power, good acceleration, better performance than expected. Braking is good, but could be better. Incredible mileage, when observing the speed limit, I have gotten outstanding fuel economy. 56 mpg highway. It is comfortable, enjoyable, and well thought out, great cargo and passenger space.

  • Its More Than A Gas Saver - 2005 Toyota Prius

I love this car! This car is fun to drive, has incredible room inside for hauling stuff, gets an average of 50 mpg for my travels, has a great sound system and is comfortable on long trips. You "learn" how to use the gas pedal in a different sort of way that enables you to control the mileage you get. My only complaint would be the upholstery. I got the black (best looking) with tan interior. The upholstery gets dirty very easily and doesnt clean up well. I also chose Prius because I trust Toyota.

  • Prius Owner Loves the car - 2005 Toyota Prius

After 6 months of ownership I have figured out how to drive the car and I am averaging 48 MPG in the City. Much better than the 12 I was getting with my double cab tundra truck. I dont miss the truck as much as I thought I would. I hauled 38 bags of mulch home from the store with the back seats down. Everyone loves to ride in it and it is very dependable. I highly recommend the car.
