The Matrix is an all-new model from Toyota. It offers sporty looks, enhanced cargo-carrying abilities and useful features not commonly found in small cars.

Pros:
  • Versatile cargo area, good gas mileage, available all-wheel drive, plumped-out features list.
Cons:
  • Modest torque output from engines, numb steering.

  • GOOD MILEAGE DEAL!!! - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I heard CD players scratches CDs but, My CDs are not scratched from it yet. I heard there is noise from the dash board, I have not heard it yet. I think its a good deal for a first car for young people.

I went to the Toy/Honda dealer looking for a more relaible car than the 300TE Mercedes wagon we now drive. Already have a SUV (Suburban) and sports car (1955 190SL) and a highway cruiser (Volvo 850 wagon). As soon as I pulled into the dealers parking lot and saw the Matrix, I knew that was it.

I bought it because I loved the exterior and the amount of room inside. Performance is about par for this class. No slouch but no burner either. The interior is more hit or miss. The instrumentation can be hard to see in bright sunlight or if the lights are turned on during the day. Fabrics and plastics are pretty good and the seats are comfortable. At the end of the day, I still find myself admiring its looks.

  • A Fatal Flaw - 2003 Toyota Matrix

The Toyota Matrix HR would be my choice of an all around vehicle, but for one serious flaw - poor visibility of the instrument panel during daylight hours in bright sunlight, or when wearing sunglasses. This is not a minor flaw, as having to squint, stare, remove sunglasses, or attempt to shade the instruments from the sun is a dangerous safety hazard. Driver attention is diverted from the road for far too long to be safe. Oil and water malfuctions can ruin an engine if not seen in time. The bottom line is that the function of an instrument panel is defeated if it cannot be seen in a quick glance by the driver.

  • A great overall vehicle - 2003 Toyota Matrix

As a VW loyalist, it was hard to look beyond the VW dealership when I started looking for my next vehicle. Yet, after looking through their offerings, I knew I had to fairly reconsider some of the competition. VWs have increased in price since reinvigoating the brand with the "New Beetle". The 2 models I seriously considered (Golf & Jetta) had cramped back seats and werent places I would choose to spend on a short road trip. Enter the Matrix, albeit funky looks (love it or hate it), the utility of the vehicle was a big seller. Nice leg room in the back seats for my average 60 height, mileage is good, comfortable seating position, all for a decent price.

  • Jack of All Trades - 2003 Toyota Matrix

Im very happy with my Matrix. I only have 900+ miles on it, but there have been no problems and its performed to my high expectations. Its solidly built and does many things well. Its a compromise vehicle, to be sure, but it does everything I need it to do, and at a great price.

  • Altered Matrix Does The Trick - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

My Matrix is a base model. It was sold with 17" rims and sticky radials. I added hi-perf lowering springs, beefy rear sway bar, front tie bar, a cold air induction kit, and a cat back exhaust. These upgrades have put a nice wide smile on my face. The only complaint I have with the Matrix is the odd clutch engagement. It takes way too much throttle and clutch slippage for a decent launch from a standing stop. Once launched Im quite happy with the performance. The Matrix is a joy in the twisties. Braking is great, body roll almost non-existent. If Toyota added these upgradess from the factory it would sell more Matrixs, Im certain of it.

Meets hauling needs. XRS auto averages 25/26 mpg. Armrests are too short and the window controls are at too severe of an angle. I have developed pains in my left wrist from the location and position of the window controls. I am 511" in height and find these window controls awkward to use. To avoid further wrist pain, I am now using my right hand to control the window levers. Glare from the rings around the gauges make it difficult to see the gauges at certain times during the day. I may end up painting the the chrome rings to reduce sun glare. After market window tinting has helped reduce glare and heat, since the a/c is not very efficient.

As a first-time Toyota owner, I was looking for a surrogate Honda Civic wagon. Im extemely disappointed in the quality--the transmission has already failed, requiring a $1300 repair. I had required maintenance performed ever since purchasing the car new, primarily by the dealership. While the car has a lot of potential, I will never buy another Toyota; anyone looking for a Matrix may want to avoid a 2003 manual transmission model.

  • So far so good - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I am very impressed with the power of the 4 cyl in the XR model w/auto transmission. Interior is designed well. The only complaint I have with the car is the fuel economy 21 mpg city. Im hoping it gets better after it breaks in.
