  • Nice Driving - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I found the car easy to drive. The front window was to expansive and easy to view. I felt like I was in a school bus, with the seat high in the car. It make viewing of the road easy. I thought the pick-up could be alot better, but once it hit 40 the car kept up with the other cars on the road. The radio and CD player had good quality. All in all this car is fun to drive.

  • XRS great car but it uses premium gas - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

The XRS is very stylish. It has a lot of power for hills. Interior features are great. Note, when you get this vehicle that it uses premium gas (octane > 91). The ride, with the "sport tuned suspension" is a bit choppy on the highway.

I was very impressed with this econo cars ride quality and interior quiet. The build quality is typical Toyota, but there are a few rattles from the hatch area.

  • Love Hate Relationship - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

My wife and I love this car as much as we hate it. We love the look of the gauges at night...HATE gauges during the day because they are near impossible to see and forget trying to read the odometer (even with the windows being tinted). We love its sporty looks...HATE the low chin spoiler that scraps on the lowest of curbs, ramps, drifted snow, you name it. We love the transmission...HATE the clutch, which has the operation of a common light switch (i.e., its either on or it off...no give). We love the storage...HATE the cup holders.

  • Spoiler is very low - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

Pros: I bought Toyota Matrix because of its hatchback feature to transport kids back and forth from their college dorm. It is roomy and has lots of space inside. Cons: The spoiler is too low and I always hit and scratch it during parking. Not only that the spoiler is just a clip on and it keeps popping out. I am very disappointed due to that. I was traveling on one of the busiest bridge in New York at night and I felt I drove on something, later when I stopped at a gas station I discovered that the right spoiler was missing and the left spoiler was hanging out. I had to stop at a gas station to tie a string to it.

  • No need to even look at the 09 - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

I have the original 03 XR, loaded, nav, sunroof, 18 inch wheels. Looks great. But the best thing is the mileage. Consistently well over 30 mpg. On a trip to San Diego from Huntington Beach, all freeway, all cruise control, very flat-land trip, right lane, 52 mph, this beauty gave me 41.3 mpg. Not typical, but true. Came w/ factory navigation + 6 CD changer; still cost just over 19K. Great for making service calls and hauling Home Depot stuff. A little weak on HP; Id rather have the MPG anyway. Had to replace a faulty nav, sunroof motor, both under warranty. No reason to even look at the 09s. Only neg is the inst panel: hard to read in bright sunlight; remedy is to replace all gauges.

  • Loved it Until... The ENGINE FAILED! - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

I bought the Matrix new and it was the first one I had seen. I have absolutely LOVED this car...UNTIL THE ENGINE FAILED!! I never had one single mechanical problem, did ALL scheduled maintenance, and it ran perfect up to 94K miles. Then within the space of two days, NO WARNING AT ALL - engine problem. Toyota informs me it has sludge in the engine, and from that day on the engine is awful. Car stalls, slugs along, you name it. Completely unreliable now. TOYOTA claims it is MY FAULT, and completely FAILS to acknowledge a longstanding design problem with the engine. Then tells me I have to pay 8-11K to get A NEW ENGINE. Research Toyota Sludge people!!! Never again Toyota...Sorry.

  • Love my XRS - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

I have owned my XRS since new and love this car! It carries an amazing amount of stuff, and handles very well for a fairly tall vehicle. Gas mileage is above average (about 24 city/28 hwy) and repair costs have been very low.

  • Driver comfort - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

Love the mileage. The car handles well. Its a great car for running back and forth to work and around town. The front seats need better lower back support. My kids have a hard time see out from the back seat. It is a hard car to beat for the price.
