Overview & Reviews
A Sport trim level debuts and revised SAE testing procedures have resulted in reductions in the stated horsepower and torque ratings, though actual output is unchanged.
- Rides and handles like a Camry, smooth V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder, lots of standard safety features, high crash-test scores.
- Poor access to optional third-row seat, bland personality.

Ex-Jeep owner - 2006 Toyota Highlander
By Love my Toyota - May 12 - 9:26 pmLove my Toyota. Used to own 4 Jeep Grand Cherokees over the years, but quality and customer service deteriorated over the years. Purchased a Lexus GX 470 for the wife and loved it. Purchased a Highlander for myself. Nice how that works huh? After 47,000, no issues, just changed the engine oil every 5,000 miles, transmission fluid and tires. I will stick with the Toyota family of cars/trucks for good.

Whatamistake - 2006 Toyota Highlander
By Whatamistake - May 12 - 2:13 pmI owned a 07 Mitsubishi Endeavor and traded with this vehicle for more seating capacity. I thought Toyota is dependable but I was wrong. Something is draining the battery AND brakes travels longer at first stop. I freaked out when it feels my vehicle will not stop. Dreaded when I come back to my vehicle and wondering if it will start. NHTSA has many reports in regards to my brake issue. Toyota have not recall this vehicle and hope it will soon.

Best SUV value - 2006 Toyota Highlander
By Barbara F - May 8 - 10:43 pmI bought this SUV late June after considering multiple sedans and other model SUVs. I test drove the Highlander and instantly fell in love with the drive and comfort. So far, gas mileage is OK (havent really officially clocked city and highway) and the air conditioning system is great! (Cools the car within seconds.) Overall, this car is a great value for the money. The 4 cylinder engine has enough pep for both highway and city driving so I didnt see a need to purchase the V6 model.

Work Horse - 2006 Toyota Highlander
By Se Northrup - April 27 - 12:36 pmLove the All Wheel Drive as snow has NEVER stopped me. Not great gas mileage, due to AWD. I didnt expect the 4 cylinder to be so strong, but its great. >2017 Update review: I sold it in 2016, partly because of the resale value $6300. My ego bought a beautiful Volvo XC90, same age with less miles, but that 06 Highlander had better outward visibility, lower gas mileage and lower repair costs.

So So SUV - 2006 Toyota Highlander
By bobby04 - March 5 - 7:16 amPurchased this vehicle in 2006 for my wife. After about 2 months we realized that this vehicle is not for us. It has the V6 but is very underpowered. It will hardly get out of its own way. The seating is very uncomfortable. The most disappointing feature for us is the traction control feature. This cannot be turned off. While in light sand at the beach, the traction control locked up all wheels with the brakes as the wheels wanted to spin. This also happened in an icy condition last winter. Very disappointing. The quality of the vehicle is typical Toyota. It will probably outlast us all. If you are considering a Highlander, think about how you will use it and what your expectations are.

Grammas Highlander - 2006 Toyota Highlander
By gramB - February 21 - 3:33 pmWe live in mountain country and I used to have a little diesel car that whimped out going up hills so I appreciate any car that climbs hills . . . but Toyotas do it best! This vehicle is fun to drive without being too big, in fact, I didnt realize it was considered an SUV until after we had bought it . . . not that I have anything against SUVs per se --- but were all trying to be a little more economically minded these days.

Perfect Balance - 2006 Toyota Highlander
By avusblue - August 28 - 3:06 pmThe Highlander is a well-rounded vehicle and the perfect compromise. It combines great utility (passenger and cargo space), smooth comfort (plush and quiet ride), nimble and quick handling (plenty of power), good fuel economy (averaging 23 mpg w/ V6), and a reasonable purchase price. I replaced a Chevy Tahoe and the more manageable size is great when parking and maneuvering - yet the space inside is still ample. I compared against the RAV4 and found the HL to be more comfortable, upscale and attractive, for about the same net price. I skipped the third row seating as Id never use it, and I appreciate the under-floor storage locker thats provided instead.

Outstanding Reliability - 2006 Toyota Highlander
By The Neutralizer - August 24 - 7:30 amWe purchased this vehicle after reading many positive reviews. My wife and I are glad we listened to the comments posted here. The HL is an extremely well built vehicle - it has 60K on it and drives like new. We had a Honda Accord before it and was also a great quality vehicle. Made in Japan is the way to go!!!
