This Year's Model Updates:

For 2006, the Scion xA gets a mild styling refresh that includes updated designs for the lower air intake, headlamps, taillamps, wheel covers and front grille. Inside, there is new seat fabric and the speedometer background is now white instead of last year's silver. The xA also receives a new steering wheel with audio controls, and the Pioneer audio system has a new head unit design and remote mini-jack port for portable music sources. Additionally, the xA offers dedicated Apple iPod connectivity, which delivers iPod display information and allows unit control and recharging through the audio system. Finally, the xA's horsepower rating drops from 108 to 103 due to new SAE testing procedures.

Pros:
Cons:
  • The cool stuff costs extra, modest passing power with automatic transmission, no cruise control.

Fun and easy to drive. But, VERY EXPENSIVE repair/replacement of a rear wheel bearing assembly (over $500...could not replace just the bearing).

Ive been attracted to the Scion xA from the first test drive. Its utilitarian, reliable, fuel efficient and fun to drive. And its so darn cute! But I almost didnt buy it because Toyota does a terrible job of supplying dealers with cars that have both a 5-speed transmission and side head/torso airbags. Finally, I found one with the side balloons and bought it. Im glad that I did. The first tank of gas delivered 35 mpg overall. I knew that Nissan, Honda and Toyota (with the Yaris) will debut similar little hatchbacks next year. The spy photos of those cars revealed they lack the elan and classy look of my xA. Im sure that the xAs cache, and its excellent fuel economy, will ensure it retains a high resale value.

This car is a blast to drive, with the 5-speed manual I am getting 36 mpg in the city. It handles the corners great and has outstanding acceleration.

  • I Love My Scion - 2006 Scion xA

It is so easy to shift. It has a lot of power, unlike the automatic. I can zoom zoom. This car is just amazing, Im so in love with my car. All the things in the reviews that downgraded this car are the reason I love the car, such as where the gauges are located. Mine has more power than I need. I frequently find myself doing over the speed limit before I even get on the freeway as I merge onto the interstate. It has so much room inside I can fit camping gear and go on shopping trips and fill it to the brim and the car still has power to zoom zoom. Also not a problem for my heavy family inside. It is just too perfect for me.

  • Best Car I Ever Bought - 2006 Scion xA

I’ve owned this car a little over 3 years now and I’m approaching 30K miles. It is the best car I’ve ever owned. No trips to the dealer except for scheduled maintenance. I live in Ventura and it’s perfect for parking in tight spots and doing the 7-mile commute to work down the 101. Stereo is great! I average 33 MPG; Lowest MPG was 30 and highest (round trip: vacation to Bakersfield) was 39.47. I’m 6 ft. and I can “sit behind myself”. MPGs would be even better if there was a 6th “overdrive” gear. Friends are impressed and sad; too bad they stopped making these. The xD is not really a replacement. If I had to replace this car today I’d give the Honda Fit a serious once-over.

I love the car. I already used its easy to use fold down seats. With that it has tons of room for such a small efficient car.

  • Bad Gas Mileage - 2006 Scion xA

The window sticker showed 31 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. I have never even come close to that. The best I have gotten is is 23 city with the air off, 20 with it on and 27 on the highway. This car has been back to the dealer several times to check it and a Toyota rep came out last time. They say, "its only an estimate" too bad, you loose and we wont do anything about it. My other car, a 2001 Honda CR-V, get 27 mpg, need I say more. Dont buy this car for the gas mileage stated, it is 34% less than that.
