This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
Cons:
  • Some small, oddly arranged controls.

Fabulous Car overall. Had trouble with fuel pump but was replaced immediately upon learning of problem. Outside a couple of items I would like see changed, we are extremely happy we purchased the car.

I have to tell you. Ive had my Max since 2003. Its a great car with both power and style. Still turns heads after 2 years! The engine is smooth and powerful without sacrificing MPG. I avg. 24.9 MPG. Not bad for such a strong motor! If I have anything negative to say, its nothing different that whats already been in reviews - fix the torque steer issue and work on the wide turning radius. Other than that - I love my Maxima!!

In 2007 I began to notice that the “chrome finish” on the front grill was beginning to peel off. This was also beginning to happen on the “chrome” accents that are embedded on the roof of the vehicle. In late 2008 the power window motor located in the driver’s door began to malfunction and now it is not functional at all. In 2009, the power door locks located on the driver’s side (front and rear doors) also began to malfunction. Power to the steering wheel column and the drivers seat have now also failed. I have also experienced issues with the air conditioning system and I have had several leaks in the o-rings that have been addressed several times. Do not purchase a Nissan product!!

The best part about the 2004 Maxima is that it has some serious power, but its as luxurious as most European cars that are priced almost twice as much. Its competion, the Toyata Avalon is totally underpowered compared to this car, 210 HP. The best part about the Maxima, is the durability of its V6 engine. My previous car was a 96 Nissan Maxima GXE. After 150,00 miles it still ran like new. Theyre easily 200,000 mile motors. If your thinking about it, I honestly dont think you can go wrong on this car. Its has 5- Series BMW quality for around 30,000. Plus, at least for now, not everyone and their mother has one.

I have worked for the dealership I purchased the car from and have always liked the Maxima better than some of our other lines but, when this came out I bought it after a 3 mile test drive without low interest or any rebates. I am careful with my money and it had to be one heck of a car for me to do this and I couldnt be happier. Now you have a 60 year old man that wont pass up a run from the light.

Bought the SL. Got 26.5 mpg on recent trip. Getting 22 in town. Only problem is gas cap is very hard to turn when putting back on. And, heating control settings still confusing when operating manually instead of on Automatic. Now have 2800 miles on it. Especially enjoying the Sirius Satellite Radio (no commercials) Smooth and quiet ride and plenty of power.

This is my second Maxima, my last one a 2000 which I loved 10 out of 10. The 2004 Maxima although an extremely cool looking car has been a major let down. So far the exhaust heat shield has come loose three times, front strut snapped, electronic chip needed to be reset, navigation sometimes wont boot, cannot replace a simple light bulb without surgery, major torque steer, interior paneling keeps seperating, seat heat buttons cave into the console with almost no pressure, and the list goes on. The 2000 Maxima was a quality build. Nissan went cheap on quality in 2004. I cannot wait to get rid of this car. Maybe Ill buy an Acura TL with more features for the same amount of money.
