Model Overview:

A favorite in the midsize luxury car class, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has provided an appealing mix of comfort, performance and safety for decades. The trademark qualities of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, such as vaultlike solidity and cutting-edge technology, have also contributed to the E-Class' great popularity among luxury buyers.

Over the years, the E-Class has been offered as a sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible. Contemporary E-Class models come loaded with luxury features and offer stunning acceleration in higher trim levels, with diesel power available if you want to maximize your fuel economy. The E-Class has never been the sportiest car in its segment, but its handling has improved significantly in recent years. Rivals are better in certain respects, but if you're looking for the complete package in a medium-size luxury car, an E-Class will be hard to beat.

  • E320 - nothing more than a Chrysler - 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

Car has been nothing but problems. Back Window has fallen down twice already and required a $500 repair each time. Dealership says MB very aware of the issue and all E320s will have this problem at some time or another. Poor Build quality!!

  • Glad its gone - 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Just traded my 01 E320 4M with 118,600 kms for a 2006 Lexus GS300. I bought the E with 80,000 kms on it and a vibration cropped up between 60 kmph and 80kmph daily until it warmed up. Not tires, but a known problem with MB and they say it cant be fixed at London ON MB. Also 2 front fenders rusting through along with bottom of the doors,my problem not MBs, and various suspension issues. CD changer and audio system was all fuzzy sounding and the drivers chair creaked like an old lazyboy. Service got expensive and it was just time to let it go. It was disappointing because we thought we would have many years of service from this car but we became afraid that it would end up being worthless.

  • wait for 2004 - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Wait for Mercedes to work out the bugs. As of March 2003, Mercedes was unable to install the navigation system, voice activated telephone, or massage seating they had advertised. (Mercedes is buying back some of these cars, but only if customers pre-paid for the features.) I had problems with my radio and dash lighting; the shop said this was "common."

This is a great car when it works, but we have had tons of suspension, braking and electrical problems. Fixing anything costs at least an arm and a leg. This is my very last Benz. German engineering just means "expensive to fix".

  • At 100K miles, hello headaches - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

Once these cars age, they eat parts like a kid eats candy. I bought mine a year ago at 90K miles and it has been a constant headache and very unreliable. Always heard MB cars are good to 300K miles, but doubt that now. I thought I was getting a bargain, but its not. Most parts online are reasonably priced but take days to get; local parts stores charge as much as twice what online parts dealers get, but often dont have what I need. I do much of the work myself and luckily have a reliable independent shop that works on European cars to handle what I cant; if I didnt do much of it, I couldnt afford this car. These are complex cars and you pay extra for the experience it takes to fix them. Plus they can have hard-to-solve problems. For instance, I have a voltage "leak" that drains the battery if not driven in two days, and the shop cant figure it out. Mercedes dealers are notorious for charging seriously outrageous prices for parts and service (most car dealers make more money from service than new car sales), so get ready for a shock when they hand you a bill. My car performs very well, is super comfy and the tunes are awesome ... when I can drive it. I love it when its working right but so glad I have a second car. In short, its a real love/hate relationship. Buyer beware.

  • Bad MBZusa service and warranty - 1996 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I have believed MB but so disapointed this time when the engine blowed out at 31000 miles, a screw linked gear and oil pump got broken then oil pump stopped working......... while there is no engine oil pressure indicator! I got a lemon car with poor assembling quality but MBZusa didnt want to be responsible for their design failure as well as manufacturing failure. Buy BMW!, it is much better in quality and service, I have had a 525i since 1990 and have no problem.

  • My Last Mercedes - 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I have had more problems with this car in 3 years than all 3 of my last Fords combined. The short list of problems. The remote fails to unlock or lock the car frequently. I need to carry 2 keys. The heater and AC does no work properly. Dealer can not fix. Dashboard light burned out. Brakes last only 8,000 miles. Radio does not turn on all the time. Car does not go ino gear.

  • Opinion not changed on MB reputation - 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Finally traded the E350 in on a 2016 C class sedan 4 matic. Better built more comfortable than the E 350. Car still exhibits a lot of road noise which I think is caused by the run flat tires. It doesnt seem like Mercedes is making quiet vehicles like they used to. This is a follow up review to my previous E350 review. I just took the car on a short trip to Sedona Arizona and I have to say that the road noise in the cabin was considerable. Over moderately coarse pavement the tires roared so much it gave me a headache. I am very disappointed in the amount of road noise that exists in $60,000 automobile with only 7,500 miles on it. I dont think Mercedes Benz products are what they used to be. Buyer beware. Opinion not changed. Road noise is still excessive. The front seats are uncomfortable. More rattles have developed. The front bumper and the attached chrome wing at the bottom are very susceptible to rock chips. Also, the interior high gloss black ash wood trim may as well be plastic it is so full of scratches and swirls and I am extremely carefull to wipe fingerprints off with a very soft cloth. I cant wait to get rid of this vehicle; however, E350s have not held their value and I am considerably underwater. Again, buyer beware!

  • not like 1999 model - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

The new one is smaller and much more plastic. Driver seat is comfortable, passenger is not. Sure, it has more zip but it should be called a 200 series as that is the size of the body. Nowhere near the space for passengers in rear.

  • If you like the shop - 2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

Having always wanted a Mercedes. I finally poneyed up the money and purchased a used 320 with only 37K miles on it. Since then I have been on a first name basis with my service advisor as I am bringing the car back to the shop almost every other month for different problems. Here is what has broken so far. Interior visors, both left and right due to the mirror covers hinge breaking (not covered under extended warranty) Catalytic converter at 70K. Ball Joints at 78K. Windshield washer resevoir (not covered $230). Instrument lighting. Entire radio. Voltage regulator. Most of this would not have been covered if I hadnt purchased the extended warranty. Too much for me. Back to Lexus
