This Year's Model Updates:

An AM/FM/CD stereo and a tilt steering wheel are now standard on all 2004 Jeep Wrangler models. A new aluminum wheel design is standard on Sahara models and optional on Sport models. Right-hand-drive versions are also available for fleet utility service. A Columbia Edition option package is also new for 2004.

Pros:
  • Cheap, fun to drive, classic styling, go-anywhere capability.
Cons:
  • Soft top a handful to manipulate, difficult ingress-egress, slow steering, bouncy suspension on the street.

Although the Rubicon looks great and boasts hard-core options such as the 4:1 transfer case, Dana 44s, lockers, etc., I have found the quality of the vehicle to be too poor to justify buying this vehicle (in retrospect). In the three months I have owned the Jeep it has been in the shop five times for transfer-case and rear differential work, including two complete transfer case replacements! Save yourself the headache and buy an old Jeep (before Chrysler got a hold of them), buy quality aftermarket options, and install them yourself.

  • Takes Getting Used To - 2004 Jeep Wrangler

Havent owned a Wrangler for several years so pleasantly surprised with improvements in drivability but a bit disappointed with the harsh ride, noise, and poor mileage. But then again - its a Wrangler! Best advice is to take an extra long test ride before you decide to buy. When we first took our Wrangler home my wife my wife got sick from the bopuncy ride. Now she can fall asleep on the highway - just takes getting used to it.

Would be fun to drive if I could get it to shift properly. Ive been driving standard shift vehicles for 36 years. Ive been getting a Loud "clink" when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and from 2nd to 3rd gears. The service tech at the dealership told me that Chrysler changed transmissions in the 2003 & 2004 Jeeps. That they can not be fixed becase they all do it. It certainly takes the enjoyment out of driving it.

  • Cheaper and as capable as a Hummer - 2004 Jeep Wrangler

Bought my Rubicon as a wedding gift to ourselves in 2002. Great wedding gift. Its a rough ride and truck like, the way Jeeps are meant to be. Never expected to ride like a BMW. Having many of the upgrades from the factory saved from trying to upgrade myself and messing it up or finding someone to do it right. In the Army for 14yrs, and taught soldiers how to drive Hummers and larger vehicles. I can say the Rubicon is as capable as Hummer. And at a lot lower cost. But never been to a Jamboree though. Looking forward to one after coming back form Iraq.

im having transfer case problems at 451 miles out of the dealer. aft drive shaft, and speed sensor seal. been waiting a week to get the parts. ive read several reviews with the same problem. havnt even taken it off road yet, just to and from work. t case was nearly out of fluid, jeep wont replace it, thats great customer service for ya. i can only hope this is the last time i have problems, or ill just let that t case leak all the way down until it burns up, then theyll be getting me one.

  • Poor Quality Costs the company - 2004 Jeep Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler has been the icon vehicle since its introduction in WW2. My first experience as a Jeep owner has been a bad one. The manual trans is hard to shift and pops out of gear constantly. It also occationally wont shift into a gear for whatever reason. I took mine to a dealer 4 times and Jeep "can find a problem". I also have the dual top version. Believe it or not the Hard top leaks worse than the soft top in a car wash. I was actually told by Jeep that "convertables leak" and I shouldnt go through car washes. I have had several convertables, and the Wrangler leaks like there is a window open.

  • Fun Weekends, horrible daily driver. - 2004 Jeep Wrangler

Its nice to go off roading, but it gets old quick, and I bought a second vehicle because it is simply impossible to live with on a daily basis. The MANUAL tranny had a factory defect and needed replaced ... all while the dealer took 3 weeks and provided no rental car, so I spent my Christmas and New Years with a $426 payment and no car! The vehicle had a fender bender too, and never ran right since, despite being fixed 3 times more. My driveshaft parts are very rusty, even though I live in one of the driest deserts on earth! The constant vibration on the freeway is the true reason I am trading this vehicle in, despite the loss Ill take. If you really want one, save $$$, buy used!

  • Fun but unaffordable - 2004 Jeep Wrangler

The major problem with this vehicle is poor fuel economy.

  • Better Get Ear Plugs... - 2004 Jeep Wrangler

This is a very competent vehicle, for off-roading, but as a daily driver it leaves much to be desired. The Goodyear MTR tires howl like a lonely dog wishing for the moon. The wind noise is certainly there, but you wouldnt know thanks to the tires. You also need to choose your back seat passengers with care, as they may need to be extra nimble to get in and out. The performance is lack luster at best, with the engine attempting to lug around 3700+ pounds, which also offsets any hope of reasonable gas mileage. It will get down and dirty in the off road enviorment, but other than that, you should have limited expectations.

  • Lousy gas mileage - 2004 Jeep Wrangler
    By -

Bought the vehicle new. First fill-up got 18mpg. 2nd fill-up 16mpg. 3rd fill- up 14mpg. 4th fillup 12mpg. After that, between 11 and 12 mpg. Driving conditions same throughout. Received all sorts of excuses for poor mileage from 3 different dealers. Only vehicle Ive ever driven that slows down when put in neutral going down hill. Traded it off after a year. Based on performance (lousy gas mileage) and dealerships unable or unwilling to correct whatever the problem was, would never purchase another Jeep product.
