This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2003 Jeep Liberty, a new overhead console, based on that of the Grand Cherokee, includes a unique interface that allows passengers to program the operation of nine convenience and safety items to their own preference. Liberty owners can now personalize several features, including which doors unlock with the first press of the remote keyless entry unlock button, the miles driven between service intervals and the amount of time the headlamps remain on when exiting the vehicle. Finally, an available six-disc in-dash CD player replaces the cargo area mounted unit. Standard four-wheel disc brakes endow the Jeep with improved brake feel on-road, decreased stopping distances and reduced brake fade. Available electrochromic interior and driver-side rearview mirrors help reduce headlight glare from traffic at night, and standard sliding sun visors have been added, which serve to keep the sun out of your eyes by providing added windshield and side glass coverage.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "carlike" as most of its competitors.

I love my two wheel drive liberty. It takes me to all the places I like to go as well as off roading. I am amazed how a two wheel drive vehicle can climb! Acceleration is good but noisy. Fuel economy is to be desired but the overall performance is nimble. Did I mention the comfort of the back seat and the ease of parking?

  • Lots of fixes - 2003 Jeep Liberty

I drive in NYC and it is a good vehicle for tight parking, driving, and potholes. Nice interior size but not comfortable on long trips. 160,000 miles. Lots of major fixes. Recall on ball joints done. Suspension is too weak for heavy city driving in a heavy vehicle and have never liked it. Wore out the shocks, now springs are shot. Transmission replaced at 130,000, heads at 150,000. AC does not work right even after recharge and fixes. Suspension is noisy and unstable clunky and unstable. Go through a set of brakes every year with rotors that warp easily. Gas mileage is OK but not a miser by any means. Cant trade it in so Ill drive it into the ground. Will not buy another one.

The 18 months Ive been driving this vehicle have not experienced any mechanical problems and except for the gas mileage (15-17) am quite happy with this purchase. My only regret is not getting a brighter color then the dark green.

  • Great Value for the Real Thing - 2003 Jeep Liberty

We were looking to replace my car with a wagon type vehicle that would handle the unimproved work sites that I occasionally visit. After testing the Ford Escape (too expensive, no 2 speed transfer case, not as nice interior) and the Honda CRV (too car-like)we took a test ride in the Liberty Sport and were immediately impressed. Fantastic styling, fit, finish, quietness and ride quality. I have owned a few SUVs and this does not ride like a truck but still maintains its poise on rough roads. Even though it appears tall it remains flat in the turns. We only have 1,100 miles so we are looking forward to logging some more miles under different conditions.

Just hit 197K miles the other week and have had very few issues outside routine maintenance. Replaced the AC compressor two years ago, rotors twice (due to my own neglect). Still only on 3rd set of tires and they have at least another 30k in them. Local mechanic said it will need new rear shocks soon. Tremendous value for my money vs. needs and it still averages 21 mpg hwy!

I have liked the look of the Liberty since they came out. I waited for a year until the 03s arrived, then I drove one. I traded for a Liberty Limited and have been pleased with it. It has a very smooth highway ride for a 4X4 Jeep. It does great off the highway as well. Jeep is the reason why the U.S. won WWII according to President Eisenhower. Jeep has been around since the 1940s so they must be doing something right. Bottom line is great car for great price. Will take you just about anywhere offroad and does great on the highway.

Great Truck Overall!! The truck could be lighter, more fuel efficient, with better braking.

  • Very Cute Car! - 2003 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I love my Jeep!! Its very cute and such a fun vehicle. All my friends love to ride in it and its perfect to haul around my son and his football friends. The ONLY drawback - it slides tremendously on icey or slick roads. The 4x4 is great, but you cant go over 50mph, which makes it impractible on the highway during these conditions. Otherwise, this vehcile gets four stars. P.S. get the sun roof - it makes a difference!!
