This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • Great for Parking.....terrible ride! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I love the design of the Liberty...its great to park and drive around town. I find that its a bumpy ride and the drivers seat cuts off my leg circulation! The gas mileage is terrible and I find it very disappointing! Wish I had my 4Runner back! Its also very noisy when driving on the interstate....noise around the windshield and wiperblades bounce. The transmission is real jerky...when you put it into drive. Also not enough cargo space...when I put my stroller in nothing else can go!

We traded our 2001 Toyota RAV4 for a 2002 Liberty Limited 4wd and couldnt be more pleased with doing so. The RAV was a quality vehicle, but too much like a car. The Liberty is very truck- like (it rides a bit firm) & solid and has a nice torquey motor. Besides feeling so solid, its also fun to drive. The pricing is very reasonable, the quality is very good overall, the styling is awesome, the towing capacity is class-leading, and its off-road capabilities are hard to beat. This is your do-all small SUV that gives the most bang for your buck. Were glad we snagged one.

Three recalls but normal for a new model. Now have over 40,000 miles and no problems at all with it. Fuel consumption is good for the amount of power (16-22) and handles really well in snow. Comfortable for driver and front seat, rear a little tight for large passengers. Watch out for dealers servicing, 3 of them have tried to rip us off on regular maintenance service.

We bought this Jeep when it was a year old with under 20,000 on the clock. We initially had problems where the speedometer stopped working; this was fixed under warranty after the 3rd attempt. Since then the Jeep has been very reliable and is now approaching 40,000 miles. Its been excellent in the winter with the snow and is a true SUV. The engine is smooth and quiet and its nice to drive on long trips. My major complaint is the gas mileage is poor. If Toyota/Lexus can manage to produce excellent mileage from the Highlander/RX330 from a 6 cylinder engine then surely Jeep could improve in this area!

In 3 years this has been an excellent truck with no probelms whatsoever. Highly recommended!

I bought my 02 Liberty used. Its a Sport model with the 3.7L, auto and 4WD. The only problem I have had with it is a throttle positioning sensor going bad which was very easy to replace. Since Ive owned the vehicle Ive added 42,000 miles to it along with lifting it, adding aftermarket skid plates, larger wheels and tires and upgrading the sound system. I havent had a bit of trouble with it and it keeps up just as well on the trails with anything out there.

  • Our new car.... - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Great Car! After looking and looking we checked out the Liberty and were impressed. Great styling inside and out and functional too. We tried it out 2 days ago (3/18/2002) in one of our annual Northeast Ohio Spring snowstorms and were even more impressed. About 5 inches of snow over ice and the Liberty actually put you back in your seat a bit with some moderate accelleration.. Our 1st 4WD but it really impressed me!!! Same outing, nailing the ABS brakes and we stopped straight and true. Bottom line We love it!!! (Gas mileage seems to be of concern to some other reviewers however Im not to worried... If I wanted good gas mileage I would not have been looking at a SUV)

  • Fun but would not do over again - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Loved this jeep when I bought it. Live in major snowbelt and does great job in snow. In last year fuel injection blew, back window latch broke, and yesterday transmission died. Time to get rid of the thing. Was fun while it lasted. Customer service is terrible with jeep-their garage did a tire rotation and only tightened lugs to one tire completely. Drove away and then disaster happened. Chrysler headquarters did not want to hear from me on this incident and said it was between me and the dealership. That attitude and lack of concern would deter me from a jeep purchase in the future even if it was a well made product.

  • Excellent - 2002 Jeep Liberty

This has been a fun ride and it handles well. A bit costly in gas in the city, however good in highway.

  • Pure Fun Fun Fun - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Fuel consumption has been a major disappointment but this car is a lot of car for the money compared to other SUVs. Air conditioning system works great and not noisy at all (well maybe at full blast...). Handles beautifully on and off the road, very peppy and responsive. Instrument panel is easy to read both at night and during the day. Dont buy an SUV until you have test driven a Liberty. The only "flaw" is that the front windshield is dangerously close to the passengers, you almost feel you are going to fall off the vehicle, it takes a few days of adjusting, otherwise a nice car.
