This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • Cute Piece of Junk - 2002 Jeep Liberty

The vehicle is very cute and fun to drive. However, Ive had my vehicle for over a year and have had the heater break twice, the cd player replaced, the hinges on my tailgate window replaced, the transmission is beginning to fail (32k on the car) and 8 trips to the dealership still cannot pinpoint a grinding noise in my right front wheel. Oh, and the remote keyless entry comes with some random code where sometimes you press once to unlock and sometimes it takes 5 pushes of the button.. or 6 or 7..depending on its mood I guess.

  • Great smaller SUV - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Ive had my Jeep for over 3 months now, already put over 10,000 miles and absolutely no problems. Everyone comments how great it looks, and it performs awesome off-road. Already taken it out in off the trails in the desert washes outside of Joshua Tree, and up several mountains around the desert. Worked well in all terrains offroad, and drives like a sportscar on the road with very tight handling and suspension.

  • solid, reliable, fun! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I feel much safer in my Liberty than I did in my 3 previous Honda Accords. My Liberty feels solid and sturdy. I did replace the original tires after 15K miles because of sliding on wet roads and I am on my third set of brake pads BUT that is to be expected from a 4000 lb. vehicle. Other than that, no problems. After trading vehicles every three years in the past I have vowed to keep my Liberty for eight years. After a good washing it still looks brand new. My Liberty survived a fierce hail storm. I expected the windshield to be shattered but, no damage. Days later I heard advertisements for "damage and dent sales" at many local dealerships. So far Im quite impressed!

  • Run from it as fast as you can! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

We bought our 2002 Liberty fall 2009. Fixes in 2 1/2 years ...Water pump and radiator $800.00+, Rear Deferential seal and door hinge $300.00+, Front struts and rear shocks $600.00+ and i did the labor myself, a rocker arm fell off and caused engine damage (a common problem in all Libertys still!) $2100.00+, Eats front brakes and rotors, Interior lights come on and go off by themselves, Lower ball joints break (factory recall) Fuel mileage sucks. Tranny does a goofy shifting thing going down the interstate at cruising speeds. (I dont know the cause of the shifting issue.) All this before or by the time it was a 10 year old vehicle that was well maintained. My first and LAST Jeep/Chrysler!

  • Gas Milage Grippers - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Ive had my Liberty for a little over a year and its a great SUV. Im really tired of reading all the grips about gas milage. If you want better gas milage you should have bought something else. If you want to improve your milage, use Mobile 1 or a similar synthetic oil. It improve mine by almost 3 GPM on the road. I added a chrome grill and it really makes the front end look a lot better.

The Jeep Liberty has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It is reliable, good on gas, has the power I need when required, hold lots of stuff for moving. I traveled cross-country in it and never got backaches or headaches because of the way the seats are made.

  • Joyous Jeep! - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I traded in my Grand Cherokee for the Jeep Liberty and absolutely love the difference. I find the Liberty much more fun to drive and appreciate the increased traction of the 4X4. The Liberty is zippy and has appropriate towing capabilities. I love the Liberty!

  • Electronic Problems & Gas Hog - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Doing it over again, I wouldnt buy a Liberty. It is a gas hog; I get about 15 miles per gallon. Plus, I experience chronic electronic problems. For instance, I pulled over for a failed left turn and brake lamp. I got home, and the light worked fine. The dome light goes on and off, and the turn signal occasionally turns on and wont go off without stopping and restarting the engine. There is also a slip in the transmission. When I brake, it down-shifts violently. I take it in, they hook it to a computer, and it works fine for a few months. Then, it gradually comes on again.

Jeep Liberty is GREAT! Awesome turning radius & pick up. One thing they DONT tell you - if you get the foglights installed aftermarket, they dont work the same as factory. They dont go on when you just have the parking lights on, even though it is the same part, and the dash indicators say they are on.

  • Look out at 75,000 - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

This was the best vehicle we ever owned until we hit 75,000. AC compressor, transmission replacement (ouch)...new radiator. It is amazing how the truck knew the final payment had been made. If you are under 70,000 consider a change fast
