This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.

Pros:
  • Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
Cons:
  • Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

I wanted a 5 speed car and when I took it for a test drive I fell in love with it. The all wheel drive feature makes it handle so well, rather like the Audi 4 (another choice). The price is great, although with a sun roof and 6 CD player it came to $37,500. The front view is beautiful, the back not so bad but the side view is pure Ford Taurus...but I live with it for the price and the way it drives. I see very few where I live but I think it is a little low end for the neighborhood...the S is getting popular here as well as the big ones. tj

Smooth and very quiet transmission, nimble and sporty pickup, and the leaping cat on the bonnet looks gorgeous !

  • A victim of misjudging - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

My X-Type has treated me very well; power and handling are always there when I need it. On the road, Im confidant of the ability to pass someone even if they try to accelerate to close the gap. Sitting in this car, you really feel at one with the machine as the seat wraps around your body reassuringly, connecting you with the road as the roar of the engine actually sounds like the primal growl of a wild, angry jaguar. The steering wheel allows you to feel your way without becoming disconnected from the road as you do with many luxury cars. We have to remember, to judge this car in the same class as other high-end cars would be unfair. This is an entry level car delivering above par results.

  • take the good with the bad - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I purchased my X-type a couple years used and I believe I got a great value for the money, thanks to the high rate of depreciation on Jags. The car has been fairly reliable for me; it looks like it cost 3 times more than I paid for it; and the AWD is great in snow. The the downside of owning a used Jag is that once the warranty runs out (along with the included maintenance), upkeep is costly, especially at the dealership where $500 to $1,000 for scheduled maintenance is normal. I would say that if you value the "cool factor" more than such practical considerations as reliability, resale value, maintenance costs, etc., then this is great car for the money - if you bought used that is.

  • Transmission problems for the past 2yrs. - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

My 2002 X-Type just went out of warranty in March, 2008. This morning I took the car to the shop because the transmission began to slip. For the past 2 years, Ive been seeing a gear fault light but the service center could not duplicate the message. Now the transmission is gone and it will cost me close to $9K to get it fixed. The car is not even worth that much anymore! Where is the reliability for buying such an expensive car?

  • An Excellent Automobile - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

This automobile is excellent except for three drawbacks: there is minimal space in the back for passengers, gas mileage is very poor, the wheels cannot be easily removed, they stick to the rotors. It would be impossible to remove a wheel in an emergency. Otherwise an excellent car, well built and reliable.

  • So far so good - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Bought used 2002 X-Type 2.5 for my wife whose 95 XJ6 finally bit the dust. Car has about 1 year left of certified pre-owned Jag warranty and 58K miles. Car is absolutely beautiful inside and out. Not a rocket but is ok to get around town. Took long trip in Texas and performed well, but I found the seats a bit tiresome on long drives. Tranny shifts quickly and smoothly.

  • A lot of little car. - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I have owned this car for 8 months now and I believe I am sold on Jaguar for life. It is such a joy to drive at any speed. You can really feel the road with this car and you have to make a conscious effort to push it to the edges of its performance envelope. I have the sport suspension and manual trans and when I get on a twisty road I really want to wring it out. The car is very quiet with respect to wind and the all wheel drive and traction control systems are top notch. The engine will rev to 7000rpm and has power from about 1500 rpm on up. After owning about 20 cars I cannot praise this car enough if you like performance in your subtile family sedan.

  • A Ford Contour w/ wood & leather - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Unfortunately, this cars mainframe is that of a Ford Mondeo (European Contour). And it drives like a Ford, save the $ 20k for the wood and leather.

  • Real Estate Machine - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I bought an 02 X-Type. I had upgraded from a 97 Cad STS. What a different car. I feel the Jag is more refined while remaining sporty. The all wheel drive is a must for the Colorado winters. In fact the X-Type is so good in the snow that I feel no need to purchase a SUV. The car has a few quirks like the turn signals wont turn off unless you make a full turn. I also wish the car had more driver leg room since I am 62". Overall though I have to say that when I went to the dealer I was going to buy a BMW or Audi. I had such a bad attitude about the old Jags and their lack of reliability I didnt even want to test drive it. Once I drove it I immediately bought it and will drive nothing else.
