This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.

Pros:
  • Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
Cons:
  • Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

I bought a new X-Type in Jan 02. After just one day I had to return the car because of a faulty drive shaft. New one was faulty and so on. After 4 replacements it work. Oh, did I mention that the car had a missing Head light when I picked it up. Next problem the heating system stopped working. Sun roof needs re-cycling from time to time. Now the car is back with the Dealership to try and sort out a bad noise from the roof. Worse car Ive ever bought. I did suggest to the Dealership that they should replace the car after one week which they agreed too if I bought out the lease for $16,000! Avoid this car and Dealership.

  • Edmunds Confuses the X-type issue - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

This is a very good car, which is comparatively cheap if you stick to the base model, which Motor Trend describes as surprisingly quick. I bought it because of good initial reviews, including a very positive one on the Edmunds web site. Then I was distressed to see Edmunds reverse itself with an extremely negative review. More recently there has been a grudgingly neutral review, which still describes lower speed statistics than the ones in Motor Trend, Car and Driver, etc. How can Edmunds be useful to buyers if they keep contradicticting themselves?

  • You Bought a What?? - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

ed During the few months that Ive owned the Jaguar X-Type, to say "Pleasantly surprised" would be my first reaction. Coming from the Honda Accord, I would say it would be the same as coming from a Cadilliac to a Rolls Royce. Being some what of a car buff, I knew of the troubles Jaguar had had and faced in the past. The car is luxurious yet functional.A smooth ride but, can be knocked around without you feeling it. I cant wait for the first Snow fall, to experience the AWD in a luxury automobile.

  • Love my Jag! - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

This is my first Jaguar and I love it more and more each day. The car is very luxurious, moreso than the bmw, lexus and mercedes we test drove. So far no, problems, but we are worried about the reliability after reading the edmunds report.

  • Wow GREAT Performance for 2.5S - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I purchased the jag with 56k mi about 1 1/2 yr ago and I was blown away on how well the performance of this car it sounds like an American muscle car when I punch it to pass uphill or entering freeway. Its fast for a V6 and it does roar. Now Im hooked on jag! The only thing is when I needed oil pan gasket fix its hard to get into the pan without taking apart everything from the bottom and labor was expensive plus parts $1000. When I purchased it I did not know that it was an AWD and my gas mileage is poor in mix driving but you can get good mileage on the freeway.

Disagree with Edmunds review of the new X-Type Jag. Edmunds got a lemon. There are some caveats and no car is perfect. I had to have a driveshaft replaced in under 500 miles, and a headlame as well, but the auto now works well and is great fun to drive. Much prefer my BabyJag to BMW, Mercedes, or Lexus.

  • best in its class - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Bought this car recently for my wife. the car runs great and 4WD is just as good as the ones on the A4s (another great car) but if you are not a performance oriented person (like my wife) and you are looking for that classy, sophisticated yet stylish look, then the x-type is it! no one believe this car is under 40K USD!! and yes ive heard plenty about people having problems about thieir x-type, im greatful that is not the case for me. so far the car is running great and black ext. black int. gives it an aggressive look. if you love the sporty feel then u should check out the A4. dont fall for the bmw 3s unless u can afford a M3.

Jaguar, or Ford, whichever one suits or thrills you, produced a winner! Its true that the X Type is not a BMW but, if you need to compare it to a BMW then just go buy one. The car has its minor comparative faults but its biggest fault is a driver who has nothing to do but compare it to something else. The interior is not "Spartan," it is very conservatively sleek and pleasing. The rear seat room is a bit cramped but this is not a family vehicle or a taxi. The X Type holds the road well and is great in curves. The bottom line is that it is nice. Test drive it and if "you" like it, ignore those who dont.

  • X Type Sucks - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Although I like the cars handeling and looks,,,, I have had a lot of problems from day 1 of my purchase. At the 50,000 mile make a leak in the drive train sent oil everyware under the car and on to the exast system. The repair was $1000 and the cost of the rental car $250.00. Jag corperate said "tough break" "Deal with it" Needless to say... I am NOT very happy

  • Great car -still going strong - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Wonderfully smooth on the highway, with paw like handling on country roads. The manual shift 2.5 gives back performance lost in the automatics I tested - the car will really move with revs kept above 2500.
