This Year's Model Updates:

After receiving significant upgrades last year, the Sonata receives only minor changes this year. Among these are a battery-saver feature (in the event that any of lights are left on); illuminated window switches; a 12-volt power point in the trunk; and electronic, rather than cable-operated, releases for the trunk lid and fuel door. Additionally, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup in previous years, so the Sonata's four-cylinder is now rated at 138 horsepower (down from 149) and its V6 is rated at 170 (down from 181), though the engines themselves are unchanged.

Pros:
  • Excellent warranty, stylish sheet metal, pleasant highway ride, lots of bang for your family-sedan buck.
Cons:
  • Noisy four-cylinder engine, some cheap interior bits.

This is my wifes car, she really enjoys driving the car, it has been good mechanically, although the rack & pinion needed to be replaced, other than that just the regular oil changes. If the car remains problem free for a couple more years, we would look into buying another Sonata.

  • Utterly amazing - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

I initially wasnt even going to look at the Hyundais when I was going to buy either a Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord. However, when I read in Consumers reports that the Sonata had predicted above average reliability, much better than the new Camry, and slightly lower than the Honda, I had to take a look. And I walked out with a new car. After test driving the Honda and the Toyota, I couldnt believe the difference. For the same price as the base Honda/Toyota, I was getting a V6, leather interior, sunroof, 4 wheel disc brakes, better warrenty, amazing stereo - the best I have seen in any production car, etc.

  • Invisible Car - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

I love my car, but it seems to be "Invisible" to other drivers. Have been HIT BY OTHER cars 4 times and at least 12 "very near misses" all in broad daylight with lights (including fog) ON! ALL claimed "Never saw my car"! Original cost of car: $19500. Total repairs: $24800. Very expensive to repair!!! My car is black with chrome. I love driving my Sonata and I had planned on keepting it for a long time, but I now plan to get rid of it. Its too dangerous! I would like a new Sonota (white this time), but I HATE the new body style! Ill be looking at other brands... Toyota, maybe.

I spent alot of time looking for a Sedan (was driving and SUV) and this is the one I wanted. Couldnt beat the price or the warranty. Every time I get behind the wheel I feel like Im driving an expensive sports car.

  • HYUNDAI GLS V6 - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

GREAT CAR FOR THE PRICE HYUNDAI HAS DONE A GOOD JOB ACROSS THE BOARD. HAVE ONLY OWNED THE CAR FOR A MOUNTH BUT VERY PLEASED SO FAR. FIRST HYUNDAI WE HAVE OWNED. GET LOTS OF POSITIVE COMMENTS. HYUNDAI SHOULD NOT FITTLE WITH THEIR CURRENT ADVANCES IN LOOKS QUALITY AND PRICES. KEEP THE CUSTOMER AS THE FOCUS AND WE WILL LOOK AT THEIR OTHER VEHICLES FOR OUR NEXT PURCHASE. KEEP THE PURCHASE EXPERIANCE AT THE DEALER SIMPLE. WANTED TO CHARGE ME $425 FOR DEALER PREP. AFTER THEY UNDERSTOOD WE DONT PAY FOR THESE NEEDLES EXTRA CHARGES THE NEGOTIATION GOT MUCH SIMPLER AND AGREABLE FOR BOTH PARTIES.

  • Not Bad - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Purchased a new 2003 Sonata LX V6 in Dec 2002. Have put 3,000 miles on it and it runs great. I agree with others, this cars is not as polished as a Toyota or Honda. We useally buy larger America cars. The Sonata matches them in ride but has less power. The trunk space looked good when we bought the car. But on our first trip found the rear speakers and other stuff really cut into the useable trunk space. Overall, we are very happy with the car and feel it is a great value.

  • Great Bargain - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

After shopping around I decided that the V6 Sonata was by far the best buy for the money. Yes, in terms of reliability, this purchase might be a roll the dice. Im hoping the Hyundai of today is like the Toyota of the late 60s - up and coming. This auto was purchase as a commuter car, however it rides well on the highway with a surprisingly quiet ride.
