This Year's Model Updates:

After receiving significant upgrades last year, the Sonata receives only minor changes this year. Among these are a battery-saver feature (in the event that any of lights are left on); illuminated window switches; a 12-volt power point in the trunk; and electronic, rather than cable-operated, releases for the trunk lid and fuel door. Additionally, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup in previous years, so the Sonata's four-cylinder is now rated at 138 horsepower (down from 149) and its V6 is rated at 170 (down from 181), though the engines themselves are unchanged.

Pros:
  • Excellent warranty, stylish sheet metal, pleasant highway ride, lots of bang for your family-sedan buck.
Cons:
  • Noisy four-cylinder engine, some cheap interior bits.

I never thought I would ever own a Hyundai, well this 2003 Sonata is my second. In 94 I bought an Excel and still have own it, I love the reliability. The Sonata looks like a Jag and runs awsome. The truck is huge and the back seat is very comfy for my 2 kids. We will be buying more Hyundais

  • More than impressed - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Very happy so far. Bought 03 GLS in Jan w/Pkg 5(moonroof,ABS,Trac Ctrl). Didnt want roof, but wanted TC, so took pkg 5. Very comfortable quiet ride, stereo good (not great), performance good, V6 plenty powerful (not as much as Hond/Toy, but better than their 4cyl and still less $), Shiftronic is fun (and contrary to some opinions, useful). My 1st month got ok gas mileage (20 mpg) in mixed (60% hwy/40% city) driving. Now avg 24 mpg. Best was a 600mi trip in Apr. that netted a very respectable 28 mpg avg (~ 80% hwy/20% city).

  • Why would you buy anything else - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

As soon as I saw the updated Sonata with the Jaguar-ish front end I knew I had to have one. Who can afford a real Jag? Not only is this a beautiful car but you get some many features for a reasonable amount of money. Even the plastic wood-grain trim is nice. And I also got abs and traction control and still kept it under $20k. Ive had the car for 19 months and just hit the 50k mark. Its only been in a shop for its regular oil changes and its 30k tune up. I have had many compliments on my car. I loved it the day I bought it and 19 months later I still do.

  • Not bad, but could be much better - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

I have only driven the car 1,000 miles. Miles per gallon are 12.8 on my last fillup. I have the LX-6 Cylinders. Car handles well and it is quite comfortable, exterior design is very striking and modern. Interior design is quite pleasing and ergonomically correct. Cannot attest to reliability since the car has only 1,000 miles.

You cant beat this car for the price. I shopped around for almost 2 months before finally deciding on the Sonata. I was unable to find any other car with as many amenities for the price. Ive now had the car for about 2 months and have put about 1000 miles on it. I have not had a bit of trouble with it so far. The last time I checked, I was getting about 22mpg in almost exclusively city driving. Handling is a little soft for my taste, but thats to be expected for a car in this class. My previous car was a Mitsubishi Eclipse, so I was used to something a little sportier.

Totally satisfying experience. Great value for the money, many compliments from other lookers and drivers when parked almost daily. Design reminds many of "Jag S class" expecially rear lines.
