Overview & Reviews
The Odyssey gains a number of improvements this year. Included with the Odyssey 2.1 upgrade is more power, a new five-speed transmission, standard rear disc brakes and side airbags, optional leather seating and DVD entertainment, two new exterior colors and minor interior storage refinements.
- Excellent crash-test scores, huge interior, fold-flat third-row seat, powerful V6, optional navigation and entertainment system, a bargain at sticker price.
- Slow power sliding doors, dealer markup still a possibility.

2002 Odyssey - Happy the 2nd time - 2002 Honda Odyssey
By HappyLs - August 15 - 10:00 amAfter months on shopping for a reasonable price, finally purchased a 2002 Odyssey EX (NEW). On the way home, the engine light came on, returned to the dealer the next day and was told the transmission needed to be replaced. After frustrating discussions with the Dealer, eventually got a refund and refused to purchase from them again. Purchased another Odyssey online from a Dealer over 100 miles away and took delivery within 24 hours of purchase. LOVE this 2nd Odyssey with the EXCEPTION of a LOUD shifting noise it makes when you first start up the engine. Havent read anyone else with this problem. Currently have a dealer looking into this.

Excellent except transmisison - 2002 Honda Odyssey
By Dave - August 11 - 8:11 amWe bought this van early in 07 with between 70 and 80,000 miles. It was really clean and nice. It drives and handles nice. However just a couple weeks ago while driving on the highway the transmission started acting up. We took it in to get checked out and now we have to rebuild the transmission and hand over another 3 thousand dollars. I was very disappointed -definitely not what I expected from a Honda and for the year, mileage and price we paid for it, this should not be happening. Only other complaint is the sliding doors. They are slow and cant be stopped midway. If the electric is off for some reason or the doors are stuck they are very, very hard to operate.

Transmission problems @ 41000 miles - 2002 Honda Odyssey
By tmock13 - July 9 - 9:07 pmI purchased new back in Jan. 2002 and have faithfully followed the necessary scheduled maintenance. But guess what, with only 41200 miles, the transmission needs to be rebuilt. The check engine light came on and the code came up p0730 "incorrect gear ratio". Dealer told me that there is no extended warranty, as assumed by many people. The extended warranty applies only to 1999-2001 odyssey. The standard 3 year/36000 miles applies to my case which I no longer qualify. Dealer was quoting me $5000 to $6000 for a new transmission. I brought it to AAMCO and grudgingly handed over $3004 to rebuild transmission with a 12 months warranty. Again, what happen to Honda quality?!

Love my Odyssey - 2002 Honda Odyssey
By pebe98 - July 6 - 4:02 pmI have owned this van for 4 yrs after buying it from my mother-in-law. Somebody backed into the van, then pulled forward and backed into it again, and the only problem I have with paint is some peeling of clear cover on the drivers door probably due to shoddy repair because the rest of the van is perfect. I have NEVER had a problem with the transmission and have never been stranded while driving a Honda. While highway driving and the wind is in the right direction, there is a howl that would make a dog cry. The horn is nice and LOUD and shrill (especially nice when people pull out in front of you and their window is down).

Need better Quality control. - 2002 Honda Odyssey
By ericchoe - May 28 - 10:00 amThis is the best mini-van so far. But still it squeaks and rattles on non- perfect road. All mini-van does this, but I was expecting better from Honda, especially from almost $30,000 vehicle. The front coin and cup holder is on same slot. When this try is out to hold cups, coins are visible and rattles. The second row seats can use better cup holders. One on each side of seat is to clumsy to use. The shifter is too close to the front panel. When I shift, Many times radio power button was unintentinally pressed. Power sliding doors has some logic problem. It would not open and close sometimes.

Super Van - 2002 Honda Odyssey
By icydon62 - May 22 - 10:00 amNever thought Id own a minivan and I fought this one but I relented, now I dont know how life is possible without one. Typical excellent Honda design and quality. Very quick and agile especially considering how large it is. My daughter loves the DVD--just wish shed watch something besides Winnie the Pooh.

166,000 miles and going - 2002 Honda Odyssey
By Brian - May 1 - 2:15 pmI have three cars with over 120,000 miles and the Honda Odyssey has been the most expensive to maintain in the past two years however, it has been the car we have put the most miles on. We recently replaced the alternator and it seems to eat through brake pads, but no major major problems (like tranny). Many of our repairs in the past year are first time ever fixes. Very nice van still that we will continue to drive.

The perfect minivan - 2002 Honda Odyssey
By JIMBO - April 9 - 10:00 amHonda has done it !!! They have created the near perfect minivan. I love the duel electric sliding side doors, and the disapearing rear seat, leaving a flat floor. The 240hp motor just purrs at highway speeds, and has great pickup from a standing start, along with operating on regular unleaded fuel.
