This Year's Model Updates:

The Odyssey gains a number of improvements this year. Included with the Odyssey 2.1 upgrade is more power, a new five-speed transmission, standard rear disc brakes and side airbags, optional leather seating and DVD entertainment, two new exterior colors and minor interior storage refinements.

Pros:
  • Excellent crash-test scores, huge interior, fold-flat third-row seat, powerful V6, optional navigation and entertainment system, a bargain at sticker price.
Cons:
  • Slow power sliding doors, dealer markup still a possibility.

  • Bad Transmission - 2002 Honda Odyssey

This is worst van ever own. Transmission dead at 100k miles and cost $5k to fixed transmission. Lots of road noisy on highway and very uncomfortable especially driver seat. Also, under power.

This van has been a terrible disappointment for us. There are so many small problems and a number of really big ones. The transmission is simply junk and Honda cannot fix it. Their rebuilt transmissions are no better. Parts are extremely expensive, more than my BMW. I had a 1992 Prelude which was great but apparently Honda has gone the way of Ford in terms of reliability. Time to try one of the Korean makers.

Do NOT buy this car! Too much cheap interior plastic that peels off, plastic bumper covers that scratch when you look cross-eyed at them. Electric doors that open/close when they want, not when you want. Un-padded carpeting will kill your knees when putting luggage in the back. Folding rear seat hooks stick out of sides and eliminate 4 inches of space for sliding things in. And a transmission that only lasts 120,000 miles!

  • The worst car and service ever - 2002 Honda Odyssey

I love my Odyssey, but it started having transmission problems within 12k miles. I went to have the transmission replaced in Boise after moving (The dealer in Los Angeles told me it was under warranty)and Boise refused. Later Honda corporate refused the repair. So much for a "warranty". I will never buy from Honda again. Given the initial price and subsequent repairs/tires, I would say a 2002 Odyssey isnt worth the price to have it junked. Given the perpetual check engine light and TCS light, I have a mind to abandon it at Honda Corp.

  • After 130k miles - 2002 Honda Odyssey

Purchased new 11/2001. At the tranny recall they said it was ok and put additive in the fluid. All maintenance has been done on time including the $1750 timing belt / spark plugs at 100k miles. The transmission has always been funky, sometimes slips to 1st and you have to stay off the gas and slow down to get it going again. While the tranny is junk, it still works and its the original one. No other problems whatsoever. F/R break pads replaced only once, tires replaced only once and are probably good for another 20k. I find that when the trans gets more finicky, if I run it hard (floor it 0 to 60mph+), it then works without major issue for another couple weeks.

This vehicle is now on its 4th transmission. Do not buy this or any other HONDA. Its a real lemon.

PURCHASED AN EXX AND HAD TO REPLACE THE DRIVERS SIDE STRUT BEFORE SALE WAS FINALIZED. I GUEST THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SIGNAL. THE FRONT SEATS ARE NOT VERY COMFORTABLE AND THE DRIVERS SEAT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS NOT FASTENED WHEN MAKING A HARD TURN. VERY DISAPPOINTED THUS FAR. WHEN I HAVE TO START A LAUNDRY LIST 1 MONTH AFTER MAKING THE PURCHASE, ITS MAKES ME WONDER IF I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT THE TOWN & COUNTRY EX.

  • IS THIS A HONDA OR A YUGO? - 2002 Honda Odyssey

7000 miles later, there are rattles from all different locations in the interior of the vehicle that no dealership can see to find let alone fix. The real gas milage is more like 15 mpg in the city and 18 on the highway not 18/25 like it said when I had purchase it. The ride was bumpy new and even bumpier now after a whole 7000 miles, the wind noise drives e crazy. I was talked out of buying the MPV and paid $4500 more when my friend bought a MPV for less money and it ten times happier with his purchase. This cars rattles, guzzles gas, is noise, and bumpy, not to meantion the power doors choose to work when it pleases and the transmission jerks at times when engaged???????????

  • Buying an Odyssey is a Pain - 2002 Honda Odyssey
    By -

The dealership that I was negotiating with was high pressure and the sales manager even screamed at me "DONT BUY THE MPV" repeatedly. A simply "Our resale value is better would have sufficed." I had to go elsewhere even though the car was offered at MSRP. Perhaps all this isnt worth getting the most popular minivan.
