Overview & Reviews
Additional standard equipment makes the 2002 Ford Escape an even better value. XLS models get a dual-media cassette/CD stereo, while XLT adds a V6 engine, privacy glass, power driver seat and an in-dash six-CD changer. New Sport packages also debut. The XLS Sport includes 15-inch alloy wheels with larger tires, side-step bars, Sport-embroidered floor mats and dark tinted privacy glass. The XLT Sport, new for 2002, provides, in addition to XLS Sport equipment, a special No Boundaries roof rack system and unique 16-inch alloy wheels with meatier rubber. Four new colors are also available.
- Strong V6 engine, comfortable cabin, plenty of cargo space, car-like road manners.
- Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, shoddy build quality, unimpressive interior materials.

Best Entry-Level SUV On The Market - 2002 Ford Escape
By JohnnyH - September 14 - 6:24 pmI have owned my Escape for over two years and never had a problem. The engine is very responsive and doesnt do a bad job of pulling 2 Jet-Skis. The Escape is surprisingly sure footed in winter conditions for its size. The Mach sound system is great. I have been very happy with the car.

Know Your Escape - 2002 Ford Escape
By CWT - July 31 - 10:00 amOrdered 2002 Escape XLT 4x4 with every option. Dealer didnt have one in stock, so couldnt see one before ordering. Expected interior to be similar to my F-150 SuperCrew Lariat...bad assumption! It is extremely cheap, uncomforatable, and noisy. (see suggestions below). This is a highly cost-engineered vehicle that is a latent entry designed to compete with the highly-successful Honda CR-V. In looking around, Ive discovered the Escape re-sale value is weak, and I would probably go with the Hyundai Santa Fe if I were to buy another mini-SUV.

Changes I would make - 2002 Ford Escape
By Jenifer - July 15 - 2:28 amThe car locks should automatically lock when the vehicle is put into drive. There should be rear air conditioning for the back seat. The passenger seat should be automatic when needing to move back and forth. There have been two recalls to this vehicle. To spend $25,000+ you should get a car that has no recalls! Ford should compensate their customers on their recalls, especially when you spend that amount of money. Maybe replace the vehicles with a newer one or one with no imperfections.

STEP AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE! - 2002 Ford Escape
By Marty - July 4 - 1:23 pmMy Ford Escape is self-destructing as I write - the CD player wont eject without help from my license, the rear wiper doesnt work, the right inside door panel is coming off, the shift indicator light works once in a while, the alternator had to be replaced at 24K, the right rear door doesnt shut without being slammed (this was supposedly fixed by the dealer), the doors are hard to open - feels like the door handle is going to break off (probably will soon), the left running board is separating from itself and its difficult to shift out of park when parked on a hill. The defrost only works with the visors down, the a/c is inadequate. Could go on and on, but am out of room.

Not bad but could be better - 2002 Ford Escape
By chevycam - June 25 - 10:00 amQuality needs to be improved. I have 295 miles on it and have had to have a factory paint defect fixed. I had the known stalling problem at 133 miles. Not a great start

This SUV is a piece of junk. - 2002 Ford Escape
By Tunes06 - June 14 - 11:00 amThis vehicle is junk. The rear door seal fell off. The CD player refuses to give back CDs. The rear wiper motor quit. The sun roof sticks. It has been recalled twice. And now the transmission has totally failed at 61,000 miles. Ford refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem but checking the NHTSA site reveals I am not the only one with this problem. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Long List of Problems - 2002 Ford Escape
By Bad luck ford - May 2 - 10:00 amBought 2001 XLT loaded escape Dec. 2000. After 4000 km. Serpentine belt idler pulley fell off. 8000km smelt burnt oil inside cab. Dealer replaced complete engine! Neighbour bought same vehicle same problem. Replaced jammed seat carriage. Hgh spd vibration in front end. Rebushed something and balance tires(Pour PDI) Plastic kick plate mouldings were replaced (needs mud flaps from factory) CD player jammed, deck replaced. Very poor quality job done by Ford. Dealer did rebate some cash and provide adaquate service each and every time this vehicle was in the shop (way too much shop time) Needs new engine coolant level sensor...on and on. Gas milage poor.

Love my Escape - 2002 Ford Escape
By Katlvrkas - April 11 - 3:31 pmI bought my Escape brand new and love it! I have had 2 recalls, but they were fixed with no problem. The only other problem Ive had is that the power windows squeal in cold weather. Dealer has always lubed and once had to replace. Overall, Ive been extremely satisfied with the Escape.
