This Year's Model Updates:

Additional standard equipment makes the 2002 Ford Escape an even better value. XLS models get a dual-media cassette/CD stereo, while XLT adds a V6 engine, privacy glass, power driver seat and an in-dash six-CD changer. New Sport packages also debut. The XLS Sport includes 15-inch alloy wheels with larger tires, side-step bars, Sport-embroidered floor mats and dark tinted privacy glass. The XLT Sport, new for 2002, provides, in addition to XLS Sport equipment, a special No Boundaries roof rack system and unique 16-inch alloy wheels with meatier rubber. Four new colors are also available.

Pros:
  • Strong V6 engine, comfortable cabin, plenty of cargo space, car-like road manners.
Cons:
  • Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, shoddy build quality, unimpressive interior materials.

Read the consumer complaints section on NHTSA.gov, for some important info on this car. You will find 106 others like me who own this car and have multiple experiences with stalling headed down hill or on the freeway. We loose steering and most of our breaking. Its like someone cut the lines. Its frightening. Dont be snookered by crash tests and packaging. Cause you dont want to know what that crash feels like! The car also surges a lot like you have the cruise control on.

My Ford Escape is self-destructing as I write - the CD player wont eject without help from my license, the rear wiper doesnt work, the right inside door panel is coming off, the shift indicator light works once in a while, the alternator had to be replaced at 24K, the right rear door doesnt shut without being slammed (this was supposedly fixed by the dealer), the doors are hard to open - feels like the door handle is going to break off (probably will soon), the left running board is separating from itself and its difficult to shift out of park when parked on a hill. The defrost only works with the visors down, the a/c is inadequate. Could go on and on, but am out of room.

  • This SUV is a piece of junk. - 2002 Ford Escape

This vehicle is junk. The rear door seal fell off. The CD player refuses to give back CDs. The rear wiper motor quit. The sun roof sticks. It has been recalled twice. And now the transmission has totally failed at 61,000 miles. Ford refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem but checking the NHTSA site reveals I am not the only one with this problem. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone.

This is quit possibly the worst truck Ive ever driven. The brakes are horrible. We had to replace the rotors at 32,000 miles. It handles like a barn on wheels. The CD changer went out and had to be replaced. The drivers window makes a horrible screaching sound going up and down. There are so many noises the dealership couldnt even figure it out for 3 months! The transaxle damper went out and it took Ford 4 months to get a part. Road noise is terrible and it eats tires. But its cute! I hate to say it but Ford could learn something from our foreign compitors. Oh yah DONT buy one!

  • Buyer Beware!!! - 2002 Ford Escape

The first problem we had was at 2500 miles. The car overheated and air conditioning went out. From that point on anytime we were driving for more than 30 minutes the car would act as if it was overheating. The dealership couldnt fix nor could for. At 28000 miles Ford finally bought the car back from us a full value. This car has major potential electrical problems. Buyer Beware!!!!

  • Going back to Jeep - 2002 Ford Escape

I traded in a 97 Jeep Wrangler for this pile of cheap junk. Not even 11,000 miles and this car needs new tires badly. Everything is plastic and fiberglass. Gear shift position is downright dangerous if youre reaching for the radio. WORST is the 4-wheel drive which really doesnt exist. I cant wait to unload this mediocre dangerous vehicle. Dont forget the recall that just came out. Ford dealer doesnt have evening or weekend service hours.

Very disappointed. At 40K, I needed new front brakes?!? the windows screech like nails on a chalkboard when in cold weather. I had to have the moonroof fixed.

An insightful warning to anyone considering purchasing this vechile..... dont do it. I bought brand new and have had to replace the engine, the steering column (twice) the door locks, repair the air conditioner, power outlets. The chip has been reprogrammed too many times to count....... and it still has problems. This thing is a death trap.

  • Escape from Ford, literally - 2002 Ford Escape

The Ford Escape could be a very good vehicle IF Ford had worried about some quality control. Problems:the drivers side mirror vibrates so badly that it has been fixed 4 times, to no avail, the CD changer ate six of my discs, a constant droan from the transmission, the dashboad controls have cracked, numerous rattles and squeeks, the left door window came off track, engine stalled. Also of note is that Fords customer service through dealers is horrible. Everytime I have taken the Escape in for a repair the mechanics have broken something else. I dont receive this poor of service from my other cars manufacturers, BMW and Nissan, respectively.
