Overview & Reviews
This year a standard CD player, climate control and power seats. The 4.4-liter V8 of the 540 now makes 290 horsepower, up 8 from last year. Rear side-impact airbags are now a no-charge option, rather than standard.
- Thrilling to drive, luxurious ride quality, clean exterior styling.
- Confusing interior markings, demanding manual transmission, high-end models are pricey.

Excellent - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By Exper. Car Consumer - June 3 - 9:18 pmHave owned for almost two years - should have bought a new one years ago when I had the chance. Excellent reliability, mileage, fun, sport driving, beautiful race car wagon. Feels like it is carved out of one solid piece of metal, I have never owned a car so solid before and I have owned most all high end luxury cars.

Wagons are Back - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By Kelly - February 25 - 10:35 pmLove driving the 525 wagon. It has the utility of an SUV with better gas mileage, lower insurance rates, and great handling & performance. Always have sufficient power when needed. Originally bought the wagon for our dog (in our 20s, no kids), but now wouldnt go without a BMW wagon! Would have never expected strangers to stop us on the street complimenting a wagon, but this happens frequently. Were already planning an upgrade to the 08 535xi Sports Wagon!

Two BMW 5-Series in our Garage - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By David/Nina - February 1 - 12:23 pmWe currently own a 1998 528ia and 2001 530ia. Nothing is like these cars on the road. Both are reliable, handsome and FUN TO DRIVE. The 528 is a little underpowered but the 530 is a Blast!

Great performance. - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By Roger K. - August 7 - 10:12 pmArguably the best sports sedan of its time (M5 excepted) and a classic in the making. This car is all about driver synergy and performance. You feel integrated with the machine: it does what you want, when you want. Reliability is a problem: radiator, digital displays, door seals, HVAC have all failed. Although problems are expected four years out, I never had this much trouble with Japanese cars. That being said, try finding a Japanese sedan that is as good to drive. Low profile tires and sports package make for cautious parking (but I cant blame BMW for that). Buy this car if driving experience is the priority.

540i cannot be beat - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By raj - May 7 - 12:51 amBest car I have ever driven. Also own a CL500 and I prefer the 540 over the Merz. Great car and the only reason I would replace is if I get a 545i. Performance cannot be beat, great ergonomics. BMW really builds a car around driving. Dont get this car if you like eating or drinking in the car, thats what American cars are for.

5 speed Sport Sedan - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By Analog - April 7 - 10:00 amThe BMW 530i 5 speed manual is an unusual combination of contradictory elements, luxury, sports car and sedan all wraped into one - excelling in multiple personalities and demanding in its attention . The manual stick is by far the most demanding I have driven. The car and I are still bondinng after almost 3000 miles and will so.

The Silver Bullet - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By fdelmonte - February 24 - 10:00 amThis is the best car I have ever owned! Powerful, luxurious, stylish, fun, (did I mention fun?), delightful. There are not enough superlatives to describe the wonder & engineering on this car. For the acceleration & power of the car, excellent gas mileage (18 city, 21 freeway) and its not through the break-in period (remember, this is a 8-cylinder wonder - I was only getting 18.5 mpg in a Volvo S80 T6 - there are no comparisons between the cars). Yes, the cupholders are worthless, but that is not the reason you buy a BMW. A must have if you truly appreciate well engineered cars.
