Overview & Reviews
This year a standard CD player, climate control and power seats. The 4.4-liter V8 of the 540 now makes 290 horsepower, up 8 from last year. Rear side-impact airbags are now a no-charge option, rather than standard.
- Thrilling to drive, luxurious ride quality, clean exterior styling.
- Confusing interior markings, demanding manual transmission, high-end models are pricey.

BMW 540i-Great car compared to M-B - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By John E. Hate - January 4 - 2:00 amGreat car. Replaced 1992 M-B 500SEL with this gem. Benz was nothing but trouble. Have had no problems at all. Surprisingly, handles great in the snow without snow tires. Recommend highly if you want a car with much power.

Best car Ive owned - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By Poway driver - December 7 - 2:00 amWonderful car. Great handling which is especially noticable at higher speeds compared to other cars. Braking is excellent. Acceleration is appropriate for engine size. Fuel economy better than expected.

great car! - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By avid driver - November 10 - 10:00 amshopped them all...drove them all...almost went for the G35, but in the end there is nothing to compare with bmw. 530i with premium and sport packages sends the price up, however there is nothing BORING about this sedan. i selected the 5 speed tranny (wife was a bit hesitant) but now glad we went this route. performance, comfort, luxury in one great looking package. replaced an SUV with a sedan version of our porsche!

Save your money - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By TeeMo - October 21 - 2:00 amReading the other reviews,I wonder if I was sold a completely different car. First, the seats are so deeply contoured that the left bolster interferes with comfortable shifting. My leg goes to sleep after about 30 minutes. If I get the steering wheel in a comfortable place, I can no longer see the instrument panel. The shifter is sloppy and the clutch has no definite point of engagement. The upper gear ratios are so close that it is hard to tell which gear I am in. Combined with that is the fact that 1st gear is so tall that I am at redline not much above 20 mph.

Id buy it again - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By sezme2 - October 1 - 2:00 amMy next automobile will be the M5 vs. S500, until then, this machine is more than adequate. Id love a roadster type, but theyre too impractical for a family-man. I chose this car for its stellar passive safety ratings (checkout hywsafety. org) and its ability to handle precisely to actively avoid a collision. My wife had not been an auto-phile, but this car has made her passionate about driving.

Wow, what a car! - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By Styve - September 28 - 2:00 amThis is the best car that I have ever driven (and I have driven a lot). Fast, great handling, looks great, and room for the family. What more could one want?

Jims 530i - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By JamesHBaker - September 27 - 2:00 amThe car is great fun to drive! I have driven more miles since I have had my 530i than I normally do. I must say that I have enjoyed every minute. If you buy a BMW, and have the time, I suggest that you take delivery at the BMW Performance Center in SC. I think it was one of the best days of my life.

Impeccable German engineering - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By bimmerphile - September 21 - 2:00 amI have had my 530i/5-sp with PP/Xenon/fold-down seat for 18 months, and it has been a real blast. Contrary to what other reviewers might have suggested, the standard non-sports suspension on these cars are extremely capable, and does ride on rails on experienced hands. The clutch is a piece of car(again, for those who are trained). The engine pitch is so sweet and smooth that you can upshift and rev- match telepathically. Heel-to-toe can be a bit difficult, unless the brake is almost fully depressed. In addition, the non-sports car is so QUIET that I can hear the fast breathing of the passengers! :-)
