This Year's Model Updates:

This year a standard CD player, climate control and power seats. The 4.4-liter V8 of the 540 now makes 290 horsepower, up 8 from last year. Rear side-impact airbags are now a no-charge option, rather than standard.

Pros:
  • Thrilling to drive, luxurious ride quality, clean exterior styling.
Cons:
  • Confusing interior markings, demanding manual transmission, high-end models are pricey.

  • Suprised at the poor quality from BMW - 2002 BMW 5-Series

Ive owned my BWM for 6 years and have been disappointed with the reliability and the quality of the interior. The cupholders broke early on because they are cheap plastic. There are controls on the panel that are falling apart. The LCD panel is almost completely burned out and I cant see what radio station or time it is. Even the odometer and gas mileage readout is starting to burn out. BMW told me it would be about $2000 to fix it. I am so surprised that a $50,000 car doesnt have better quality materials. I have also been disappointed with the reliability. Last year I spent about $4,000 on repairs. I wont buy another BWM.

Not a good car to have if you are busy and using it as much as I do. The radio goes out on/off. The seats wear you out after a long day and the a/c has its own temper. What really discourages me is that the radiator went out after 47,000 miles. If you need reliability dont get here.

  • one word: problems - 2002 BMW 5-Series

I love the car (525i with M sports package manual) when I actually get to drive it and when it works. It spent more time in the service dept than with me (hence the low mileage). The svc. dept. rep. knows me on a first name basis. Took it twice for the air bag light once for a problem with the drivers seat 4 times for a clutch problem (which has not been solved yet). Im in the process of looking for a new car. Definitely NOT a BMW.

Reading the other reviews,I wonder if I was sold a completely different car. First, the seats are so deeply contoured that the left bolster interferes with comfortable shifting. My leg goes to sleep after about 30 minutes. If I get the steering wheel in a comfortable place, I can no longer see the instrument panel. The shifter is sloppy and the clutch has no definite point of engagement. The upper gear ratios are so close that it is hard to tell which gear I am in. Combined with that is the fact that 1st gear is so tall that I am at redline not much above 20 mph.

  • Awful Experience!!! - 2002 BMW 5-Series
    By -

I have a 2002 530i - sport-premium package. The first 4,000 miles were like a dream ... incredible. Then began the vibration, and the "shimmie"ing of the steering wheel. The dealership tells me that is normal for a sports-premium 530i. I cant beieve it. This car shakes! You can feel the vibration in your pant legs ... even on the smoothest roads. I have loved BMWs for a long time. This one, my very first, has been such an awful experience, I can barely look at BMWs anymore!!! Hate is a strong word. Its the only one that fits my experience to this point. BMW - if you rad this please help!!!
