This Year's Model Updates:

The Volvo V70 has been redesigned for 2001. Major changes include a new body structure, fresh styling, a revised interior and upgraded feature content. Safety figures prominently with the new V70 (as usual), but it is also more sporting than before, especially in T5 trim.

Pros:
  • Superb comfort, plenty of safety equipment, solid construction and amazing braking ability.
Cons:
  • High price, odd control placement.

  • Ford, stop messing around with VOLVO - 2001 Volvo V70

The car is pretty reliable only in Dec 03 and Jan 04 I was left stranded and it was due to the battery, somehow I needed a new one. The quality of the interior of the car could be much better. The carpeting in the front of the car is always stiking out, it was like this since day one, I complained, but to no avail. The outside driver mirror shakes when you hit 50 plus, that just got fixed this week after many trips to the dealer. Other than cosmetics I would have to say that it is reliable.

  • No regrets! - 2001 Volvo V70

We purchased this car used. It had 6K miles on it, and had been used as a rental. We bought it at significant savings, and because it had been used for part of the year, we were able to get the "extended warranty" for certified used cars. We have never had to invoke any warranty repair. The car has performed beautifully. The mileage is impressive for such a large car. Plenty of pick up to be had without the Turbo. Having previously driven a compact car, I can tell you I had no trouble adjusting to this one. It is easy to maneuver.

If you prefer the safety and handling of a station wagon to an SUV or a van, the V70 seems to be the ideal choice.But... Our V70 has been in the shop eight times in two years. Five bulbs have burned out, and not because of daytime running lights either, as turn signal and brake lights also burned out. The service department just states that this happens. Unfortunately, the most crashworthy car is not very safe when you are driving around out of town at night with one headlight. The remaining choices for a family are a much more expensive but well-made foreign wagon (not a jerry-rigged Ford) or a safe, boring, soggy-driving Toyota or Honda van.

  • 2001 Volvo Transmission Problem - 2001 Volvo V70
    By -

Ive had 3 2001 xc 70s, now Im down to 1 and I have a 2001 V70 T5. They all have had the same problem- TRANSMISSION....I think somebody should start a lawsuit against Volvo because anyone who has a 2001 Volvo has a transmission problem. Ive tried everything to fix the problem...nothing works. The only thing that would help is buying a whole new transmission.

It has been 2 years since my last update. Purchased my T5 out of my lease 2 years ago - car is now 5 years old with 62K miles. Thank god I purchased the VIP warranty. Took it in for the $700 60K service (!) and mentioned a knocking sound from the suspension and also a bad oil leak. They found knocking was result of broken sway bar connectors and a broken engine mount (over $700 in repairs), and the oil leak was from the engine block itself, and may require replacement of the whole engine!!! They have had car for over a week. This was after replacing a seal on the turbo return ($150 repair) on the previous service. VIP warranty good for 2 more years or 100K miles - will sell before then.

  • Best used car Ive owned! - 2001 Volvo V70
    By -

Ive owned 2 other Volvo wagons prior to this one. A 94 850 T-5, 99 XC and my current 01 V70 T-5. I live in Anchorage, Alaska and decided on the 2 wheel drive model due to my previous XC was a nightmare with repairs. Drive handling with my 2001 V70 during winter has been pleasant on slippery roads with the normal all weather tires. The winter tires rubbed against the wheel wells while turning and elected to ditch them. The lower ground clearance helps with stability with little body roll in turns Ive noticed. Transmission takes a little getting use to for effective use. Ive found when accelerating from a stop it was best to ease on the gas which allowed gears to catch up.

  • Good design but poor execution - 2001 Volvo V70

The V70 T5 has reasonable performance, but it did not live up to its potential. I understand from my friends in Sweden that Volvo actually provided reprogrammed chips to V70 T5 owners because the 2.4T outperformed the T5. From the very beginning, we have had a number of problems related to poor quality control. Interior trim on the A-post fell off the first month we had it. Over 10 bulbs have burned out. The dealer has replaced them without charge up until now, but it still means we have to take the car in frequently. The biggest problem was complete transmission failure at 60,000 miles. Totally unacceptable in a car in this price range.

The ultimate mom mobile with style. In trying to avoid the world of minivans I happened upon my V70 T5 and just love it. The seats are exteremly comfortable and there is no loss of power or comfort extras on this Volvo. So far I have not had any major issues with the car and the small things I have had the warranty covered without the slightest problems.

  • Often Love This Car - 2001 Volvo V70
    By -

Have owned this since new. I enjoy the comfort of the ride and the saftey features. The car has never broken down on me. I travel cross country alone and even camp in it. Its solid. I have had to replace the top motor mount, mass air flow, lots of headlight and tail light bulbs, the electronic throttle and the temp sensor for the heater. But the car has 150,000 miles on it. The motor doesnt use a drop of oil. I have used Mobile 1 in it since break in. The car is amazing on icy and snow packed roads. I often say I love the car and have kept it longer than my cars in the past. But repairs are expensive and I hate the dealership. With no other dealership close, I would not buy another one.
