Overview & Reviews
For 2000, the big news is the availability of the 150-horsepower 1.8T engine on the Golf GLS. In addition, the Golf receives several equipment updates, including child-seat anchor points, sun visor extenders, a glare-reducing shade band on the windshield, a brake wear indicator light in the instrument cluster, a theft-repelling engine immobilizer and a tether for the fuel cap. All Golfs are now eligible for dealer-installed in-dash CD player; a dealer-installed CD changer is also available. Finally, GLS buyers can opt for a premium Monsoon sound system in lieu of the standard eight-speaker system.
- Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available 1.8T engine, hatchback utility, lots of standard features, high-quality interior materials, 10-year/100,000 powertrain warranty.
- Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard.

Great Volkswagen Golf - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By golfcrzn - December 24 - 2:40 amI bought this car used with 80,000 miles. I still havent had any problems and nor did the person I bought it from. Its a fun, reliable, zippy car. Ive had a lot of cars and this is perhaps my favorite so far. I love all the options for being a economy based car.

my first VW lemon - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By prof - October 2 - 10:00 amIve owned VWs since 1967 and this is my first lemon. The window regulators have failed in two windows at a cost of repair of $330 each. The oil consumption was so bad at 30K miles that they had to replace the rings. Every month it seems like another $300 bucks.

VW disappointment - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By rpauley - June 27 - 2:00 amBought a loaded GLX TDI with all options. Creaked and groaned when first driven off the lot. Told it would go away. Windshield defective has a coating on the inside that cant be cleaned off. 3rd heater motor, window quit. Rattles and thumps are embarassing told I was acutely sensitive by service mgr. Velcro lint catcher interior discusting.

Good, Affordable Pocket Rocket - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By Mauricio Gomez Weiss - May 2 - 2:23 amI purchase my 1.8 turbo in June, until now I had to change the gasket (vw dealers in Canada kind of expensive),excellent power, handles incredibly, good acceleration. Downside part as all the comments, plastic glove box and central arm rest cover breaks easily and are expensive to replace unless you get used ones, rubbery cover on the armrest front door drivers side peels like when you are sunburned. Fuel consumption around 9.1 lt/100km could be better. Cargo space amazing (fit a 40" Sony LCD and 2 passengers plus the driver all comfortable). Its an affordable car with good power and decent fuel consumption (could be better though)

Great Little Car - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By Lynn, Basking Ridge - December 7 - 2:00 amThis is car clearly the best one Ive ever owned (even better than my BMW). Its pickup is awesome for a four- cylinder car. The instrumentation is easy to read and the interior is VERY roomy. The Monsoon audio is acoustically pleasing. Great German handling and solid construction.

Still lovin it. - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By JStew - December 3 - 2:00 amI bought the car new in 2000. Have had only a few minor problems. Yes, the oil issue is a pain but it improved over time. Ive had the hatch latch repaired under warranty and the cruise control module was replaced, but otherwise no problems. Great gas mileage, still fun to drive. Hatch holds a lot of stuff. A great basic car.

Thought it was the perfect car - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By krunky - November 14 - 2:00 amBought this car new and thought that I would have it forever (see favorite features). At 35k mi, I began to question if itd last over the log haul. 40k mi service/ inspection was bad. Rear brakes shot, LED brake light out, etc, etc. $1500+ in total repairs. Always kept up with the service, so I had a majority of the work done. When more problems started to appear, high cost and poor service were not encouraging. Decided to trade it in for a used 4WD Toyota Truck. Doesnt handle as well, but it is much more rugged/ durable. The Golf is a great car to operate, just a pain to maintain. Too much time and money for a daily driver.

Love/Hate for me too - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By first and last - October 14 - 10:00 amLove to drive it, hate to fix it. Had it for 2 years, been to the dealer 10+ times. All four windows have broken at least once (pass. rear broken 3 times), doors and windows freeze in a mild winter, vinyl on all four door panels melted off, rear cup holder broke (even though nobody uses it), both back brakes completely replaced, recalled twice. The best part: the extended warrenty I bought at the dealer in Canada cannot be redeemed at the dealer I go to in the U.S.!! Whats up with that? Definitely my first and last VW.

My 2000 Golf GLS 4DR - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
By Wild Bill - February 6 - 10:00 amI did a lot of research before buying this car. I understand it is the top selling car in Europe. It rides extremely well for a compact auto. Very tight, good gas mileage, and love the key. 2 proactive recalls that were handled by the local dealership. Ive owned for close to 2 years, no problems and still very happy with it.
