This Year's Model Updates:

For 2000, the big news is the availability of the 150-horsepower 1.8T engine on the Golf GLS. In addition, the Golf receives several equipment updates, including child-seat anchor points, sun visor extenders, a glare-reducing shade band on the windshield, a brake wear indicator light in the instrument cluster, a theft-repelling engine immobilizer and a tether for the fuel cap. All Golfs are now eligible for dealer-installed in-dash CD player; a dealer-installed CD changer is also available. Finally, GLS buyers can opt for a premium Monsoon sound system in lieu of the standard eight-speaker system.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available 1.8T engine, hatchback utility, lots of standard features, high-quality interior materials, 10-year/100,000 powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard.

  • Problems - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

I really like the TDI golf, but I have had many problems with the car. It is the first car that I ever purchased new. All 4 tires went bad at 12,000. The brakes went bad at 25000. A window fell down in the door and the door has never been able to open correctly. The engine light is on now, dealer says it needs a new relay ($250). I wonder whats next!

  • Im Hooked on my Golf - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

Always been a Toyota Junkie, not any more. I bought it with 130K on it and in two weeks I put on about 1800 miles. Its a really fun car to drive the Ergonomics are perfect for me and its a great handling car on the back roads of NH. No problems, I got it with new brakes and new rubber. Green with tan and black interior, great combination. I have no complaints at this point. Added a half a quart of oil at 2200 miles. Thats pretty good for me. I run my Toyotas up to 250 / 280K. Lets see what the VW can do.

  • Not much to complain about - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

This car has been stone reliable (mine is a German car). I live in the NE, and these roads are horrible, especially in winter. The Golf has been a great companion for my long distance commute, and I will probably never own a car that costs less per mile. And it is VERY good in the snow with snow tires.

  • It sacrificed its life for my sons - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

On May 6 my 2000 VW Golf GLS ended its life suddenly in a 60 mph headon crash with a guardrail. On a positive note, my son and his prom date were uninjured. I had bought that car in 2000 because it was one of the few small cars that had top crash test ratings and all the features of larger cars, such as ABS, sunroof, adjustable steering wheel, fully adjustable seats, etc. So what did I think of the car? Overall, very good. Will I buy another Golf? Maybe. Either that or a Civic. I like the Golf better in most ways, but since I want to buy a used car the reliability history of the Civic may trump. I fear getting one of those few Golfs-from-hell that seem to have all the problems.

  • 48 months of supereconomical fun - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

Only problem was with the windows and VW fixed those free. Inside space is amazing, mpg 50 always. Handling is super even in snow but low ground clearance. Dont try to sleep in it. Turns into mini wagon with ease. Even better performance after a new set of upgraded tires at 45K. Most people dont realize its a diesel unless I stay in one spot too long and the stink catches up with me. Gas station attendants argue that I am at the wrong pump.

  • 250K and counting! - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

Got w/40K put about 210K on it, overall its been great, the regular VWGolf problems, the front power windows broke about 3/4 times but VW had a recall and fixed for good, refunded me the $ spent on fixing the previous times, the H/L bulbs would burn every about 4/5 months I carry a spare set in the glove box, other than that just regular maint.the 2000cc eng use oil, thats normal 1 qt every 4 or 5K since new, changed timing belt 1st time @ 150K and was still like new, changed water pump as well just 4 prevention, still orig. clutch. just recently @ 245K the radiator went, so how can I complain??? its a great car. Ive read ppl claim to be good in the snow, mine handles horrible in the snow.

i cant believe the problems i have had with this car. ive had my o2 sensor changed twice in the past 6 months. my mass air flow sensor took a dump on me at 30000 miles. my instrument panel for my a/c, heat jammed up and had to get that replaced. my coolant sensor went bad at 28000. i cant believe a car that carries the vw badge could preform so poorly. i should of bought a honda!!!

  • Fun car. - 2000 Volkswagen Golf

I bought this car new in 2000 and have had it for over 10 years now. Other than a few dings, the body still looks great and the interior is fresh. It goes like stink and handles extremely well, yet is comfortable for long distance driving. The only niggling problem I have had is the airbags; have fixed them 3 times and now the light is on again.....

  • Make sure you get the maintenance record - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

Had the can since it was new. Had to replace the MAF 4 times. ($250 a crack, but got them to cover all but $150 or it). Has to replece the computer and wiring harness because it was what was tripping the CEL for the MAF. Tires had to be replaced at 15000. Glove gox broken. Mirror adjuster broken. Break-away mirrors BROKE at a VERY slow speed. 46000 and the clutch is going and I dont drive it that hard, but it is fun to drive and the 500+ miles to a tank is always a plus.

  • Lowest cost per mile ever - 2000 Volkswagen Golf
    By -

I have put over 128 thousand miles on my Golf Gl TDI. After an initial warranty issue with the rear brake pads failing twice (fixed free) I have done nothing other than routine maintenance. The car is quick, responsive and agile very reliable, starts in sub zero weather no problems and i can drive from chicago to Houston texas on 2 tanks of diesel averaging 85mph.
