  • Avalon worth a look - 1996 Toyota Avalon

This is the first Toyota Ive ever owned. Ive been very satisfied with the reliablilty and performance of the Avalon. Id buy another if the following were taken care of. The distributor/dealer network needs reworking. The distributor network adds after market accessories. The result is the 2 sticker system. The dealer network is substandard. In every case, theyve produced substandard or incomplete at dealer prices. In short, the car was purchased based on Consumer Reports testing. They were right on. You can drive it with just changing oil, air filters, and timing belts and probably drive for 200,000+ miles.

  • Only car Ive liked after two years - 1996 Toyota Avalon

Ive had a Merecedes roadster, a couple of Volvos, several Buicks, Oldses, and other comfy cars but this 96 Avalon is the best. The suspension has had strut problems, but otherwise, at 122K, its a fine-running, easy on the body kinda car. And although it has a "Cashmere Beige" stodgy exterior, it has surprising performance and can really scoot when you need it to. If you can find an Avalon at a good price, BUY IT!

  • Toyota is the Best - 1996 Toyota Avalon

I bought the XLS brand new in 96 when I was single. Ive since married and had 2 children and today at 189,000 miles my baby is still kickin. I agree with everyone that the maintenance is about $5,000.00 or less because Ive spent around $3,000 so far. What I love the most is the reliability to start in 10-20 degree weather and Ive never had a breakdown ever. Its roomy enough for the kids to hop in/out of their booster seats and at 52" I can adjust the seat forward or up/down to match my body length. I also love the lumbar that adjust nicely. The only thing I miss is a CD player because it was not that big in 96 but I have a personal CD player that kicks when I connect it to my car stereo.

This 1996 Toyota Avalon has been an excellent vehicle. Bought it new in 96 and have had no problems with the car except those inflicted by the Toyota dealer service dept. Leather seats/ergonomics are very comfortable, can drive for 10 hours without getting stiff. Car is very peppy and enjoyable to drive. Want to buy another one when this one wears out, but it only has 160,000 miles and seems to have plenty of life left. This car had the same battery and brakes for the first 120,000 miles. All other parts still original other than required maint. like timing belt. The paint and interior have held up like a much more expensive car.

  • Wonderful - 1996 Toyota Avalon

I just bought this car when it was standing in a lot for 2 years according to the owner. I dont know why he didnt use it. I bought it with 197K miles on it. It runs smooth, has power, is very comfy and all the electronics work. The radio was replaced a few years ago. The only things I have to fix are a flex pipe and the inner tie rod end, due to wear. Amazing that these are the only things that need replacing. Great mileage I filled up once for $20 on premium and the needle moved a little with the 40 miles I made so far.

  • Very Reliable! - 1996 Toyota Avalon

Great running car. Roomy and very good visibility all around. This Toyota has been the family "work horse" for those everyday short trips to school and shopping. Comfortable, and quiet ride. Good gas mileage all around. I run 87 octane with no problems. Reasonable maintenance cost. Original owner... this is a keeper!

  • Better than a minivan - 1996 Toyota Avalon
    By -

I bought this car as 2nd owner with only 55K miles on it to haul three kids (in carseats) in the back. I bought this after having to replace an engine in a GMC Suburban. Wanted something easy on the mind and on the wallet. The trunk is huge!! Motor/transmission is butter-smooth. Quiet ride. Corners better than Moms Lexus ES 300. Did have to replace rack and pinion. Otherwise, extremely reliable. Interior parts are solid. Wood grain is peeling though but for a 11 yr car, I cant complain too much. Gas mileage is fabulous (much better than minivans). Took it on a 2200 mile trip and averaged 28 mpg highway.

  • Wish it would die.... - 1996 Toyota Avalon

Always wanted a quiet, reliable car. This one has been a keeper, owned new since 96. Up to 155K miles, no major problems. Go thru tires about 50-60k, 1st battery replaced in 2004! Struts have been making clunking noises for a few years, but not a safety issue. Side windows get a bit noisy, especially when I have to put ski racks on - they will leak, thanks to the aero door design. Tend to break the auto retract antenna a lot. dunno why. Bought car after a 2-door SAAB 900S. Miss the Euro handling and heated seats in NE USA. Been super-reliable. No real complaints, I wish it would die; after eight years Im getting a bit bored and d

  • Outstanding Car - 1996 Toyota Avalon
    By -

The best car Ive ever owned in 40 years of driving. Ive spent about 1,000 in repairs over 6 years. Keep the oil changed, and I think it will run forever. Even today, it feels like the day I bought it.

  • Exceptionally Reliable Car - 1996 Toyota Avalon
    By -

My 1996 Toyota Avalon was a gift to me in 2002. The car at that time had approximately 60,000 miles. This car has been so reliable that I am still driving it shy of a decade later. I currently have over 307,000 miles and counting. I have had to do a bit of work on the engine (valve gasket covers etc) when the mileage reached around 280,000, but its running on the same transmission. I liked this car so much until I had shipped from Mississippi to Washington State with 300,000 miles because I trusted its reliability. It hasnt let me down, but it may be in its last years. Cant complain with over 307,000 miles.
