Overview & Reviews
A mild facelift and fewer options are the only change to Mercury's midsize sedan.
- A fine American car with nice ride characteristics and a great interior.
- This is an ugly car. New competition from Honda, Toyota, and Oldsmobile make it a tough sell.

Was Good, Then A Moneypit - 1998 Mercury Sable
By londonlad1 - December 6 - 12:06 amA horrible aberration. Previous Fords, even oldies have been rock solid. I paid $2300 for this, 1 owner, full history 73k on the clock. Was great for a year, then it started to mug me on a regular basis for repair money. $1200 (steering rack), $300 (water pump) $170 (serpentine belt & tensioner) $600 (2 wheel bearings) $500 (front calipers & pads) $100 (EGR valve and perished vacuum hoses - did that myself) $300 (removal of throttle body & cleaning clogged air intakes, $1200 (aircon evaporator) $1200 (aircon compressor) and $100 (headlamps, did those myself) What was a bargain has cost me a fortune. Next time, Ill buy an old Jag. At least Ill go broke in style.

Been a Great Car - 1998 Mercury Sable
By zachtenfrugen - July 15 - 9:00 amThis car was a fleet car when I purchased it in 2001. Although it had 170,000 miles on it at the time, it had been meticulously maintained. I actually am one of those "strange" people who loved the look of it. I still love the look. Its been a great car, and Ive put 40,000 more miles on it. Finally had to put in a $2,200 transmission in it last year, but I now have 205,000 miles on it and plan to keep it til it literally falls apart!! Good gas mileage, very roomy inside, very dependable car. I actually consider buying another one. This car just seemed to "fit" me.

Good on service - 1998 Mercury Sable
By John - June 12 - 10:06 amI bought this wagon with 98K and I have about 175K now. I had some problems with the emissions control, brakes and tires, normal stuff. Just recently I brought it in because it was running a little rough. The station called me a few hours to say if needed a tune up, so OK. I did not tune it since I bought the car, so I though that was pretty good. As it turns out, I had original plugs in the car. 175K miles before its first tune up! Not bad and still going strong.

Never Again - 1998 Mercury Sable
By Murse - May 17 - 7:43 amhonestly this has got to be the worst car i have ever seen. i bought it with only 18,000 miles on it and within a week the shifter broke. making it so i couldnt shift. that was a 200 dollar fix. 3 weeks later the tranny dropped. i was like i give up. after replacing the tranny for $1800 a tire fell off while driving down the road. the lugs were so weak that when i accidentally went over a curb the wheel just rolled off. never again will i buy a mercury or ford. i have had the worst luck. go toyota all the way.

Excellent Car - 1998 Mercury Sable
By tbonestewart - January 1 - 2:00 amJust returned from a trip to West Virginia. The car with the 3.0 L engine performed excellently going up and down hills, with the car fully loaded (4 passengers and ski gear). Higher octane gas helps under these conditions. Performs like a new car with 84,000 miles- who says Detroit cant make good car?

Very reliable Sable - 1998 Mercury Sable
By Love that Sable - September 29 - 1:13 pmIn 1995 I was attracted by the styling of the Sable and Taurus. I like the futuristic aerodynamics shape, it is still looking updated in 2005. Never boring interior. But I was surprise by the excellent reliability. There were not a single problem for 7 years. The Sable is very stable on the road with the firm suspensions, very little float, good for high speed and lane changes. Road holding is very good except on snow. Kind of like driving a train. Very little lean in turns. A lot of car and accessories for the low price. No charge leather, auto air condition, moon roof and air filtration system, heated rear mirrors, California emissions for ULEV,etc. Very roomy inside with a large truck.

Old reliable - 1998 Mercury Sable
By Ron - March 31 - 8:20 amBought new with 37 miles on it. Wife drives most of time. After 10 yrs. and 63000 miles it still performs much the same. Duratec v6 hard to beat. Plenty of power to spare and mileage is good for a large car. Car is much lower to ground than new 2008 model. I am 62 now and not as flexible as I was at 52 when I bought. This is now my biggest complaint as entering and exiting has become less convenient. New model probably better for this. In 1st 3 yrs had to replace every power window motor and antenna motor. At warranty end air went out but was repaired by dealer at no cost. Front leather buckets are only good for short trips. Killers for trips over 4 hrs. Trunk only good for groceries or flat items

Great car, except for body design - 1998 Mercury Sable
By GFBeach - July 16 - 10:00 amI found a great deal on this car with low mileage (only had 38000 when I bought it). At first I was turned off by the trunk design... from behind, this is a pretty ugly car. However, its got it where it counts: The engine has power to burn and it rides very comfortably.
