This Year's Model Updates:

A mild facelift and fewer options are the only change to Mercury's midsize sedan.

Pros:
  • A fine American car with nice ride characteristics and a great interior.
Cons:
  • This is an ugly car. New competition from Honda, Toyota, and Oldsmobile make it a tough sell.

  • Been a Great Car - 1998 Mercury Sable

This car was a fleet car when I purchased it in 2001. Although it had 170,000 miles on it at the time, it had been meticulously maintained. I actually am one of those "strange" people who loved the look of it. I still love the look. Its been a great car, and Ive put 40,000 more miles on it. Finally had to put in a $2,200 transmission in it last year, but I now have 205,000 miles on it and plan to keep it til it literally falls apart!! Good gas mileage, very roomy inside, very dependable car. I actually consider buying another one. This car just seemed to "fit" me.

I bought this wagon with 98K and I have about 175K now. I had some problems with the emissions control, brakes and tires, normal stuff. Just recently I brought it in because it was running a little rough. The station called me a few hours to say if needed a tune up, so OK. I did not tune it since I bought the car, so I though that was pretty good. As it turns out, I had original plugs in the car. 175K miles before its first tune up! Not bad and still going strong.

Bought new with 37 miles on it. Wife drives most of time. After 10 yrs. and 63000 miles it still performs much the same. Duratec v6 hard to beat. Plenty of power to spare and mileage is good for a large car. Car is much lower to ground than new 2008 model. I am 62 now and not as flexible as I was at 52 when I bought. This is now my biggest complaint as entering and exiting has become less convenient. New model probably better for this. In 1st 3 yrs had to replace every power window motor and antenna motor. At warranty end air went out but was repaired by dealer at no cost. Front leather buckets are only good for short trips. Killers for trips over 4 hrs. Trunk only good for groceries or flat items

  • Great car, except for body design - 1998 Mercury Sable

I found a great deal on this car with low mileage (only had 38000 when I bought it). At first I was turned off by the trunk design... from behind, this is a pretty ugly car. However, its got it where it counts: The engine has power to burn and it rides very comfortably.

  • Sable is just fine - 1998 Mercury Sable

Nice car - not great on gas in the city, but very good on the hi-way.

  • Most car for the money - 1998 Mercury Sable
    By -

I have put 135000 miles on this car and have spent less than $300.00 on repairs. I bought it because you can buy a used Sable for less money than any other car its size. Very good value if you need a roomy family car. The only thing I dont like is the lack of power on the base 3.0 engine. Go for the 24 valve version if you can.

  • Reliableness - 1998 Mercury Sable

Great reliable car. When over 115,000 problems may start to occur, in my case anyway. Can really get what you pay for with this car. Bought with 80,000 and didnt have a single problem for over 4 years.

  • Ten years and still going - 1998 Mercury Sable
    By -

I saw this car in 2005 now mind you it is about to reach the ten year mark, and has 93k miles on it, you couldve told me it just left the factory yesterday and I would have believed you. I had it checked out,a nd yes there were some problems, problems all too common with the Sable, but the dealer was happy to fix them and I for $3500 walked away with an above average used car. I am happy to tell you, the car to this day still turns heads, provides a smooth ride and on I-95 can keep up with those around it. After 150k miles my used car shows no signs of stopping and thanks to Ford I will not have to go through the process of buying a car anytime soon, thank you.

  • It has its ups and downs. - 1998 Mercury Sable
    By -

At first it was a great car. Then after a year little bad things kept happening. Window frames keep breaking, paint job flecking, windshield wipers goofy, parking brake light misbehaves, door sensors often wrong (had to remove interior light bulbs to save battery), hinge on front storage compartment broke, springs in change storages broke. Etc. On the plus side though nothing serious has ever broken. The only major failure after 160,000 miles was the bearing in the alternator went bad.

  • Watch out for the transmission! - 1998 Mercury Sable
    By -

I bought this car new and its been great till the transmission went at 81K and almost 6 years of age. Its costing me a small fortune to get it back on the road. After reading about Fords transmission problems, this is the last Ford for me.
