This Year's Model Updates:

New hatchback and wagon body styles were added to the lineup at the end of 2004 and carry over unchanged for 2005. The optional automatic transmission on all V6 models has been upgraded from a five-speed to a six-speed unit.

Pros:
  • More fun to drive than most family cars, slick-shifting manual transmission, smooth power delivery, nicely appointed interior, multiple body styles.

  • Very solid first car - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

I recently got this as my first "own" car, Im graduating from college soon, and decided to invest in good, newer car that would last me a while. Bought this one with 11k miles. I was attracted by the styling, and after the test drive, I was hooked. The dual exhaust, rear lights, low-profile tires all look awesome for a car at this price. It drives great on the highway and in the city. The handling is very very good, acceleration smooth, and I havent had any mechanical issues with it so far. I liked it a lot better than the other cars I tried: Toyota Camry, Suzuki Verona, Pontiac Grand Prix, Pontiac GT. Hondas were all too expensive, so I didnt get to try them. Mazda6 is simply great!

What an amazing car to drive. Great manuvering, speed, features, and dynamic. Mazda6 is unbelievably the smoothest, customer friendly vehicle for traveling.

Poor performance and reliability. New 6 speed constantly needs to be recalibrated. Ticking noise from valves requires valves to be retorqued. Throttle assembly went out, and now there is a knocking noise coming from the engine between 700 and 1200 rpm. Not a purge control solenoid as told by dealer and manufacturer. Let the buyer beware.

  • TOO FUN TO BE A WAGON! - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

I drove the Passat and the new 05 Legacy before I bought the 6. The Mazda is the right balance of size and price. The test drive is the clincher. The Mazda is more about the drive where the Passat is about the ride. The Mazdas reliability reputation is better than the VWs as well. The Subarus all wheel drive gear gives it a smaller interior than the Mazda. The 6 had a large advantage in price over the Subie. I loaded it up (ordered car) with Sirius, Bose, auto-tint mirror, moonroof, cassette and CD changer, cargo tray, all-season mats, cargo floor carpet (should be standard!) and the car after rebates and discounts was a still reasonable $25,000. The 2.5GT Subaru was pushing $30,000!

Comfortable and sporty - much more fun to drive than my old Odyssey (but I miss the extra seats). Winter driving has been a pleasant surprise - the traction control really works. Factory finishes are good - Michelin tires, leather interior, etc. No problems in 14,000 km of driving. A very reasonable ($50) dealer service. The only "shortcoming" is with cruise control - accelerating with the steering wheel button often causes the transmission to kick down to a lower gear rather than simply accelerating in 5th. Fuel economy is not as good as expected but it runs fine on regular gas - something that cant be said for a lot of the other cars I considered.

  • A Great Car for a Great Price - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

I recently purchased a Mazda 6 at the beginning of this year after an accident left my Honda Civic totaled. I looked at Pontiac G6s, Hyundai Tiburons, Civics, a Lexus and even BMW to replace my beloved Honda. After testing a BMW 325, I discovered a Mazda6 sitting on the lot, intrigued by its designed I took it for a drive, and was blown away. Id never thought to even look at Mazda, but this had exactly what I wanted: great looks, great equipment (almost fully loaded), great handling & performance, and a value I couldnt pass. The manual is much sloppier than my Civic, but feels like a rocket ship despite its competitions better numbers.

I test drove Accord, Camry and Altima before I settled down with Mazda 6. Camry is comfortable, but boring. Altima looks good buy but feels like a junk inside. Accord has the best interior but looks ugly. Plus, for a couple thousand bucks less, I can get more options with Mazda 6 than Accord. My Mazda 6 is so fun that I will take it out simply for a ride. The 17" alloy wheels make it look better - definitely a sport car!

  • Still going strong at 95,000 mi. - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

I bought this car in Dec.06 with 21,000 miles on it. After a few minor issues due to the previous owners neglect, it has provided me with years of trouble free, reliable transportation.I still love to drive the car even after all this time. I keep up with routine maintenance,(oil and filter change, tire rotation , etc. ).When the time comes to retire this one, Ill probably look to a newer model 6 , consider me a repeat buyer.

  • Good but not Great... - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

When I bought this Mazda6 last November I did not intend to buy a Mazda. After driving it I liked it, but still reluctant. I read the reviews in the New York Times and went back to Carmax for another test drive...and brought it home. Fit and finish are above average; not too big and not too small, just right for me, 5- 10" at 160lbs. Lots of get-up and go from a powerful 4 banger, 160 horses in the higher revs. It will get you on the freeway and back off. In the stop and go traffic of Houston heat I worry about overheating, but have put Mobil 1 oil to help with heat dissipation. We have had 90 degree days and no problem yet - wait till August.

  • fun in my Mazda - 2005 Mazda Mazda6

What a joy to drive. My husband bought me the car last year because of its sporty look with the hatch, the fact that it was a 4 door and came available in a 5 speed, and its overall safety rating. We got the blazing copper metallic and weve tinted the windows and put on Mazdaspeed wheels to make it look even sportier. For 20 years I drove Nissan 280z-300zxs and this car feels just like that but in a more practical size. What fun and a pleasure to drive; I have to keep an eye on my speed because I get to cruising real fast and dont even feel it. Great pick up, great handling; fantastic sound system and awesome look all make for a real enjoyable ride.
