This Year's Model Updates:

The big news is the arrival of the S60 2.4T AWD and its slick electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. Additionally, all S60 models get Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA), enhanced traction control performance and improved throttle management, resulting in quicker response in everyday driving situations. Volvo's Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DSTC) system is now standard in T5 models and optional for the 2.4T AWD (starting in December 2001). Other model-specific changes include satellite controls on the steering wheel and rear cupholders for the base 2.4 model and a memory function for the power seats and mirrors in 2.4T and T5 models. The entire lineup gets revised rear headrests, ISO-FIX child restraint attachment points and an emergency trunk release handle.

Pros:
  • Long list of standard safety features, luxurious interior, powerful turbocharged engine in top-line T5 model, deceptively quick 2.4T powerplant, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Handling lacks true sport-sedan precision, expensive optional equipment, torque steer in the T5 model.

  • Watch out for transmission problems - 2002 Volvo S60
    By -

I bought a 2002 S60 before doing my research. I didnt know that the 01 and 02 years had transmission problems. I would up with a $4000 bill for a new transmission! The lesson I learned was.....do your research. There was plenty of information on the internet about this problem. I wont do this again.

  • Beware of Customer Service - 2002 Volvo S60

We bought this car new coz we loved the look and reputation of Volvo. However, weve had major customer service problems as well as electrical problems. Also, it is very difficult to see to change lanes due to the head rests in the back and the way the car frame is built.

This car has been in the family since it was brand new. Its a pretty nice car, but its had a lot of silly little problems. In its lifetime, the wheel bolts rusted, the front bumper popped itself out of place. Just recently, went to get gas and when the attendant opened the fuel door it fell into his hand. This, from what I have seen, is a popular issue with S60s and V70s of this generation. The glove compartment door is now sagging, and the paint quality is very poor. Mechanically, the transmission seems a little screwy, causing the car to shake when you let go of the brakes after a complete stop. This is an awesome looking car, but unfortunetly its a bit unrefined.

  • Was A Great Car - 2002 Volvo S60

We bought this car under the preowned program. Had 14K miles when we got it. The car was wonderful. Surefooted during nasty weather and handled well (it had the 17" wheels on it but not the sport package). Local dealer service was excellent and we were always treated like royalty everytime we were in. Unfortunately, the car was rear ended by another driver doing 45- 55 MPH while I was sitting at a dead stop waiting for the car in front of me to turn left. The cars was totalled but I walked away with minimal physical injuries and no whiplash despite the ferocity of the impact. The other dirvers insurance adjuster couldnt believe someone walked away from the crash. Buy one it could save you.

I bought my 2002 S60 used with 21K miles on it in 2004. It now has 110,000 miles on the odo, and Ive passed it along to my stepdaughter as her college car. I get it serviced regularly and it has not been overly expensive to maintain through my local Firestone service center. Its been an overall dependable car with only a few age related failures, such as alternator, water pump, strut mounts, etc. Nothing too big at all. The one gremlin this car has, and it seems to be rather common with this series, is that it eats tail light and headlight bulbs on a regular basis. However, these are easy to replace by the owner, and I now keep spares stashed with the spare tire in the trunk.

  • Not Too Happy - 2002 Volvo S60

The first week we had the S60 it dumped antifreeze in our driveway and had to be towed away with a faulty radiator. The dealer told us no rental could be given because we didnt break down on the road somewhere. So much for their great roadside assistance. The power door locks are a perpetual problem. In for same repair 4 times. Dealer has ordered wrong parts and made us return yet again. Left turn signal works intermitantly. And by the way the pwer door locks dont work right again! I think its so safe because its always in the shop and not on the road.

Purchased what appeared to be a good condition used S60 - DIM module replaced, new boots, plugs, alignment, balancing, lower control rods all replaced within 6 wks time. Still cant make hard right turn without jerking motion from car. First and Last foreign car. Waste of money.

First of all the customer and dealership service for the vehicle is the worst I have ever had. Horrible. Vehicle stalled and left my wife and I stranded. I was able to start it again. Dealer advised loaner cars were a curtisy but not manditory. Also advised they would not provide a ride home for me if more then 15 miles. Honda here I come! Dealer advised car was fine!
