By J Hall - January 4 - 2:00 amWhen I purchased the car it was shared that I would only pay for oil changes and everything elso was covered. Not true as I have come to learn as I open my check book one more time! I have had a number of rattles, that have never been fixed, and I need to book my service appointments weeks in advance as the dealer has no loaners, it was even suggested once that since I worked near my dealer I arrange for a coworker to pick me up, something I did not appreciate.

Excellent Car - 2000 Volvo S40
By Sriniv - January 4 - 2:00 amI am seeing so many bad reviews on this site and wondering why all these people are having so much trouble with this car while I had no problems at all - Well except the Check engine sign. I drive this car more than most people - 45K in less than 3 years. It is still as much fun to drive as it was on day one. In fact the engine seems to be getting smoother by the day. I take frequent long trips in this car (>6 hours) and I can honestly say the trips are comfortable. There are some interior design problems such as the front cup holder but it is not so bad that I would give it a 3 or 4 rating.

By Eyedoc - January 4 - 2:00 amIve owned this car for over a year and had to replace the brake pads twice. Ive just about experienced every negative comment that is written in the reviews: from replacement of bulbs, wind noise, rattles, brakes, engine lights, etc. It is a great car in many ways, but the reliability is horrible. Although the S40 is cheaper than most of the foreign cars on the market when compared to BMW, Audi, MB etc..the cost of repairs and regular maintenance can be astronomical once the warranty expires. I would definetly not suggest this vehicle to anyone.

Good Car - 2000 Volvo S40
By Smuggus - December 20 - 6:10 amThis car has been awesome. I bought it and did some work too it (400 dollars) and it lasted me a 4k round trip with no problems. I do know about all of the claims to infamy on here, like the battery not starting on the third day, you needed to reset the computer. The rough idle is either motor mounts (problem on all volvos) or ignition coils. The cup holder had to be put there because there was nowhere else to put it, if it was under the arm rest then the arm rest couldnt come down all the way. So there you have it, it is a good car and if you take care of it and know how to take care of the Swedish/Japanese beauty she will take care of you.

By MGB GT Racer - December 3 - 9:23 pmIts a great car, but was expensive when fully optioned. The lower optioned cars tend to drag the loaded ones into negative equity. Its deceptively fast, not quick. With a few aftermarket mods itll show taillights to most anything.

Early Failures - 2000 Volvo S40
By Dave - October 27 - 9:10 pmI bought a Volve for safety and reliability. Safety I got, reliability was poor. Changed out both front strut assys at 60K miles, turbocharger leaked costing over $800 to repair before 80K miles. It is parked in my garage now because there is a front suspension problem. I am going to get rid of it and never buy a Volvo again. The check engine light comes on more often than not without a defineable cause. Shift handle now fails to lock in park position.

Happy with my Volvo - 2000 Volvo S40
By ex-BMW Owner - September 24 - 10:00 amI had previously owned a 1987 BMW 325 series and LOVED it! I was the original owner (13 years) and it had 270,000 miles on it. I was sure that I would buy another BMW. A friend of mine was buying a pre-owned VOLVO and he saw the S40 in the showroom and immediately thought of me. I instantly liked it. I now have almost 60,000 miles on the car. I have replaced the brakes twice and the headlights 2 or 3 times, the battery (April 2003) and tires (May 2003). Overall, I am very pleased with the car and I hope to keep it another 7 years.

By happy owner - September 16 - 11:26 pmTo make this short, I love the car! I purchased it new at the very end of 99 & have been driving it since 1-00. I really dont get the negative comments. Maybe, as one person mentioned, mine hasnt had the same issues because I ordered it before they came out & it was delivered from overseas?? But, it is NOT the first year for the car; they had been out in Europe for a couple of years. Ive replaced a few things, but for a car with 100,000 miles, thats typical. The headlights did seem to go out too quickly at first, but doesnt seem to be an issue now. Theyre about $12 at PepBoys & theyll put them in for free, or for $5 if theyre not feeling generous. Id buy this car again

VOLVO JUNK - 2000 Volvo S40
By Volvo S40 - August 17 - 9:43 pmI bought the car 4 years ago and after 1 year all the problems started, I nearly replaced half of the car about 35 parts estimated cost about $4,500 in parts (bough for $9,500) a lot changed myself to save some money. Every time I changed something I kept telling myself oh after changing this it would run good without problems. So now the first chance I will get I am getting rid of it. I have another car, toyota and no problems. I will be getting toyota as soon as volvo is gone. I feel bad for the next person who is going to get it. Car still have problems and no mechanic can figure it out, why cant it start right away, you have to crank on it for a while. JUNK JUNK JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
