Disappointed - 2000 Volvo S40
By Disappointed in MI - June 7 - 10:00 amPurchased car because of Volvos reputation and great price for the options. I had to change brakes after 1st year, and Im looking at another replacement on this second year. Dealer confessed that Volvo had a poor braking design warranteed the first set of brakes. Cup hold is in the way of the radio.

By S40d Out - March 13 - 10:00 amIve owned my S40 since March of 2000. Since owning it Ive replaced the brakes every 10,000 miles give or take a few, the bulbs are constantly burning out, the front cup holder blocks the stereo, I get poor gas mileage, and it seems to be in the shop all of the time. On the upside, the seats are comfy for a car its size, and it has a peppy engine, and its relatively fun to drive. Priced with options, it can run fairly expensive. Sorry Volvo, you need some work on this little one.

Lemon - 2000 Volvo S40
By Scoops - March 13 - 10:00 amIve had the car for two years and only have 9,000 miles on it. Saying that you would figure it would be in good shape, wrong. This is the list of my problems so far... lights, seat,speaker, cupholder,tires,stalling, faulty breaks at 6,000 miles, a new break problem now, gear shift sticks, wipers.... the list goes on. I have one more year on the lease and think Im gonna get rid of it even thought I will loose money. This is a lemon, it has been in the shop sooooo many times. Save yourself and by something else!!!!!!!

Dont do it! - 2000 Volvo S40
By caiti - February 18 - 2:00 amThis is, without a doubt, the worse car I have ever owned. With slightly over 30K on it I have replaced :six tires and two rims, the moonroof, countless back bulbs, the air conditioner, two sets of brakes, failed front headlights, hazard lights, and of course, lets not forget that pesty check engine light (which others might find easy to disregard but when you are transporting your one and two year old children, I still find very alarming). I have never written a review of anything in my life but, in this case, I felt I must.

Im gonna miss this car - 2000 Volvo S40
By torik - January 29 - 2:00 ami had this car for almost 4 years, and it was awesome. i love to drive fast and it always gave me that extra kick, i loved the interior and cant imagine how i would have gotten around in the rain without the "W" wet/winter mode button. the interior was ahead great; it had stuff that my friends brand new cars didnt,like heated and power leather seats. i never had too many problems with it, it had a temperamental check engine light but otherwise it was just a great first car to have. i ended up rolling it off a mountain(over 300ft down/out) and have no doubt in my mind that that car saved my life, i was literally able to walk out, and only have some minor problems with my shoulder.

Impressed - 2000 Volvo S40
By Cono - October 24 - 1:26 amPurchased this vehicle used certified. Initially skeptical as vehicle was already 4yrs old and 2000 was the intial yr for this model. However, unit only had 25K miles. Ive been extremely happy with the vehicle. Its paid off, and has had minimal problems during ownership. Minor repairs included internal thermostat replacement, exhaust joint component replacement, CD player, and headlight replacement. All repairs were covered under warranty, but would have cost < $300. Recently, Ive noticed some minor oil spotting and some interior lights (buttons) that are not lit - most probably a fuse.

By burcotrut - August 2 - 2:00 amI love my S40 and have never had a serious problem with it. Why are people complaining about the size of the car? If you want it to be bigger, get an S60 or 80! Yes, the cupholder position sucks but it has all been changed. This was the first year that the car was released in the US, and is bound to have some design flaws, but they have all been fixed in the newer models. Maybe if people were less abusive with their car, then they would not have problems. Also, the price of maintenance is high because ITS A EUROPEAN AUTOMOBILE!!!! What do you expect. If you cant afford maintenance, buy an american car.

Nothing but trouble... - 2000 Volvo S40
By Volvo Hater - July 28 - 10:00 amThis car has been in the shop too many times to count. We have almost replaced the whole car piece by piece. Just when we think were finished, something else goes. Fuel pump first 7000 miles,numerous bulbs of every kind,sunroof twice,brakes,brakes,brakes,and headlight wipers. Oh,did I mention brakes? Brakes have failed and makes me feel unsafe. Lots of other repairs on miscellaneous parts. Our service dept. is terrible and the dealer wont help us out of the lease. We are counting down the months until were out! This is one family that wont be buying another Volvo. Also, my daughter thinks its ugly. Maybe because the paint is falling off.

Definately not a lemon! - 2000 Volvo S40
By volvomama - July 19 - 2:00 amI have owned my S40 since it was brand new 3years now. True I have replaced my headlights,break pads and have had some oil leaks, but all was covered under warranty. Prior to my Volvo I drove and loved my BMW, but I had to downsize,yet wanted to have a car with a nice reputation and I think pricewise,the S40 was the right choice. Overall, I like my little Volvo,its quick and peppy and when its clean and waxed it looks rather nice. With a new baby (three kids total), I will admit its rather tight in the back. Two more years to pay off and I will consider the new SUV by VOLVO. Have some faith!
