This Year's Model Updates:

After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
Cons:
  • Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

I bought this car new in 1999, coming up on 9th anniversary. It has been the best car Ive ever owned by far. Aside from routine maintenance, Ive replaced the water pump and the timing belt. Thats it. Gets 26 mpg city, 36+ mpg highway, with standard transmission and regular gas (although VW recommends premium). It is now well north of 150K miles and still runs beautifully. No rust. No complaints. And lots of zip too! Has a few features (like the sunroof) that now cost a lot more.

My Vw gets me where i want to be. i drive it alot and it gets great gas mileage. It hasa lot of odd bugs that need to be worked out and it always has something going on but i guess what car with high mileage doesnt have that. Everything radio Wise works.. and heat and air.. so thats fine with me.

  • Fun to drive - rough on the wallet - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

This car is really fun to drive. It handles well. It costs WAY too much to maintain. $900 to replace the timing belt. $500 to replace the brakes. Timing belt slipped and had to get the engine replaced. Found a used one for $3000 as opposed to the $7000 the dealership quoted me. Basically its not worth having because it costs too much to maintain.

  • You cant Have Mine - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Bought it new and after 60K have nothing but praise for this vehicle, and the warrantee that came with it. I havent paid for a thing other than gas, oil, breaks and new tires. A (slightly) noisy water pump was replaced for free under the 100K drive train warrantee, and thats it. The car still looks great, doesnt burn a drop of oil, is pretty easy to work on, fun to drive, is loaded with features uncommon in its price class, Gets 28/31 MPG, plenty of power and offers exceptional comfort for me @ 61", 215lbs and my family.

  • Great car for the money - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I purchased this car used to replace a 94 Passat GLX. Great performance, styling, and many helpful features head the list of improvements, including keyless entry, side curtain air bags and a great stereo. Mileage is in the 21 MPG range. Just replaced the water pump at 60k, otherwise the car has been flawless!

  • love that car! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

This is my dream car...from the time first came out Ive always wanted one. And let me tell you...there have been NO dissapointments at all. The car offers a smooth quiet ride, it hugs the street and the turbo allows you to feel a little power despite the economical 4 cylinder engine. I love the look of the car and the comfort. It seems like youre driving a more expensive car than you actually are. Reliability has been good, except for a couple of minor quirks in the beginning. 5 stars!!!

  • An excellent value - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Ive had my 99 passat now for almost 2 years and have clocked about 40k miles on it (odometer currently reads a little over 90k) the only problems ive had with it are a failed catalytic converter(totally my fault, i drove the car till gas was empty, still VW replaced for free), leaking engine seal (covered under warranty) and heated side mirrors(this i had to pay for), right now, it seems my cruise control is starting to act up. otherwsie, car is very reliable, considering the mileage , id say this was a really good record. i think some ppl have just been stuck with lemons. too bad we dont hear from more satisfied drivers.

  • Great Car, but... - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Had the Passat now for four years and it has never failed us. Car has everything, great looks, good performance, lots of room, but in my line of work I have placed alot of miles on the car--105k in four years. Ive recently had to spend $1500 to replace a water pump, timing belt, and an axle boot along with the 20K interval service. Im concerned that this might be a trend from here on out, but up to this point, the car has been very reliable. One disturbing note--service cant readjust my factory setting headlights without a fee, which I thought was pretty bogus.

This car is awesome, the turbo engine, and the 5 Speed are sweet. The sound system is great, and the gauges at night are cool-looking. I am not usually into the VWs but the passat has made me feel like I did when I first got my license, its a joy to drive!
