This Year's Model Updates:

After promising the availability of all-wheel drive this year, Volkswagen, in a last-minute product change, has cancelled the Synchro all-wheel-drive option on all Passats for 1999 and will not be offering the GLS wagon with a V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Tight structure, fun-to-drive, comfortable seats, nice sound system, artful design, an Audi at Volkswagen prices.
Cons:
  • Excessive squat and dive when accelerating and braking.

  • 35mpg highway - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Bought a 1999 30v manual Passat and it is getting 34mpg+ on crosstown trip. Leather heated seats, heated mirrors, lots of power and still 35mpg at 75mph. Searched hard to find a better deal and am very satisfied. Paid $5150 for one that had $4000 spent on it, glove box had many tales. Water-pump, all timing-belt components, ABS computer, marker lights, oil-stuff. Love it for what it is!!!

I love this car. It was the only car I could find with all the features I wanted for the price I was willing to pay.

  • I ignored the reviews and bought one anyway, DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I read many mixed reviews about Passats before purchasing mine used. It is a 5 speed with 120,000 miles. That may seem high but 4 a stick it really aint to bad. The car is cute and fun to drive but its a POS! Ive had the car 2 months and have had nothing but problems. The power steering went out, had to replace the pump twice and now its making a winding noise as i turn. Cheap made parts are falling off left and right. Blinker light even fell off as i was driving on the interstate. windows are crap and work only when they want to. now it wont even start! Just makes a wierd ticking noise. Its a cute car, but im going back to my busted and rusted chevy cus thats never quit on me!!! [violative content deleted]!!

  • Has potential, needs improvement - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Was very excited about this car until I bought it and many small things went wrong starting on the first day. Thank goodness its certified. If the automatic waited longer to shift, it would be more fun to drive and the cup holders are just silly. Seems like they almost got it right, maybe newer models have been improved. Next time Ill buy a Honda.

  • Will Never buy it again - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

I am so glad I got raid it this car. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PASST, this is by far the worst car I ever had, in 1 year and 2months of ownership I had to take it in many times, to the dealer and a private mechanic. Problems includes: one recall, on electrical problem (left me on the road), steering, AC, Battery, cup holder, brakes, and windows. Everything is stupidly expensive and it is very hard to find. After that I had more problems with the windows both sides and had to had it repair twice, also started to have some problems with the power steering before I sold. It is very had to re-sell this vehicle.

  • 145K and still driving - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

My V6 has had some minor suspension repairs, such as 1 tie rod and an upper control arm. I think its entirely reasonable to have to replace tires, brakes and some suspension components when mileage exceeds 100K. Great car overall. Had I known it was going to last so long, Id have gone for the leather. Love the interior. Easy to upgrade and find parts after 9 years.

  • Whats so hard about building a good car - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Too many plastic parts that break well before their time - the toggle-switch for the outside remote mirrors, four window regulators (2 on one window, and the 5th is currently broken) so the window falls into the door, timing-belt at less than 50K miles because the hydraulic tensioner failed (and the repairs were rejected by the class-action suit!), a rear seatbelt jammed, and the two front turn-light assemblies fell off the car (at different times) because theyre not mounted with screws - theyre held-in by spring clips. I bought the car for my wife for safety, but Id be afraid the airbags wouldnt work when you need them most!

  • Change your timing belt early! - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I loved driving my VW Passat. It looked great & was fun to drive; the only problem was with reliability. The final straw was when the timing belt broke at 84,000 miles and caused so much damage I had to get a new engine. VW schedules replacement of the timing belt at 105,000 miles. If you love your Passat, change the timing belt early and save yourself $5,000.

  • Satisfied Owner - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

After some initial problems, taken care of under warranty, my Passat now shows a proud 86,000 miles. It is a great performance car and I have not regretted the purchase of this car.

  • fun to drive, no fun to repair - 1999 Volkswagen Passat

This car can break your heart. It has great style and drives very well, but the amount of time and money you will spend in the repair shop will leave you wishing you had reconsidered your choice.
