This Year's Model Updates:

The VW Passat has been redesigned inside and out for 2006. The current version is 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider than its predecessor, with a more spacious cabin. Initially, VW will offer only a sedan, but the wagon rejoins the lineup later in the 2006 model year. Engine choices include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6; last year's diesel engine option has been dropped. Trim levels have been renamed and recast; the Passat now comes in Value Edition, 2.0T, 3.6 and 3.6 4Motion trims.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines, excellent ride and handling dynamics, roomy and upscale interior, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • V6 models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals.

  • Feel like Luxus, but - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I like my new 06 Passat very much for his performance, solid body, and quality. Feel very safe while Im driving. However, the car is way too sensitive, I took my car to the dealship because the gas cap is not tight enough and engine light went on. I wish the dealership can ask me to check those little things before I have to bring it in.

  • DO NOT BUY A VW - MY BIGGEST REGRET - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

This is the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned. The car has been in the shop over 15 times & about 6 months total. WE have spent over $5000 in repairs for this BRAND NEW car. It is worthless and full of problems and recalls. Entire steering column has been replaced twice w/in 14 months; entire radio/cd had to be replaced; air conditioner went out after only 2 years; brakes had to be replaced after 2 years; It is a worthless car and I am scared to death to drive it anywhere because it continuously has Service Now lights on; check engine light; beeping all the time; warning lights; Please do not buy a VW. VW of America does not care about their customers; they have shut us out.

  • Awesome - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Just picked up my new Passat. I had to decide between getting a 2007 Camry, a 2004 Passat 1.8T GLS (with 22,000 miles on it) which was in impeccable condition, and this car. After weeks of research, and test driving, I absolutely could not justify paying $16,000 for the used Passat as it is a whole different car now, nor $20,000 for the Camry as it did not compare in the test drive at all. I picked up the dark grey Passat Value Edition 6-speed for $21,580 (this includes the $1,000 loyalty bonus). I figured that I can live without the chrome lining around the windows, while I can put alloy wheels myself further down the road as I wear out these sweet Michelins that come standard. No car in this price range can compare with the Passat experience!

  • Just bought a new 2006 - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Just bought a new leftover 2006 3.6. Got a great deal since the 2008s were already on the lot. Although silver is never my first choice in color, I think this is a great looking car. It has just the right amount of chrome and black trim. The 17in wheels are handsome too. It does need premium gas, but the highway mileage has been terrific, especially considering the performance of the 3.6 engine. The interior and trunk are beautifully finished. The exterior fit/finish are flawless. The console does creak a little but I think the plastic is more temperature sensitive than a flaw in essembly. On a couple days when the temp went above say 45, console didnt creak.

  • I love to hate my VDUB - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

First the AC busted a hole in itself then all interior parts bubbled and peeled off within a year, then my cam system blew they replaced that, then my shifting cables broke, sun visors dont work and fall out of the holes that hold them up, all buttons had to be replaced, consistent alignment problems, consistent gas cap issues, consistent check engine light, fuel pump replaced, vacuum seals and all that kind of stuff replaced, now warranty is over and Im stuck with only one year payments left with a piece of crap that is fun to drive that I have to trade in when all i wanted was a car that would last 100k miles, Ive got 58k and Im DONE.

  • Thanks Volkswagon - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I was looking between the Acura TL, BMW 3-Series, and when I finally test drove the New Passat, there was no more competition in my mind. I love this car. The ride, the placement of everything inside, Everything is great! I know that Volkswagon has had problems in the past, so time will tell with the Passat.

  • GREAT CAR!!!! - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

I love my 06 Passat 2.0T fully loaded with the Nav. Before I bought this car I test drove a 330i, C230, G35, TSX, and Accord and this car took all the good things from each one and rolled them up into a very well built package. Some of the most important factors in making my decision revolved around fuel economy, speed/torque, and safety. My Passat has averaged between 26 mpg and is very quick (much faster than the TSX). I use the navigation everyday and I am very impressed with its ease of use, features, and vibrant screen. The amount of storage space is excellent and very well thought out. Give this car a test drive and I think you will find it very hard to not fall in love.

I am surprised that my 2006 Volkswagen Passat 2.0Ts engine is so powerful. Ive experienced no drag at all. So far its been the best car purchase Ive ever made. Not only does it get great gas mileage and fit three teens comfortably in the backseat, all my kids friends love it! That is a major feat if your teen thinks your car is cool.

  • Looks are Deceiving - 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Although I was intially impressed with its acceleration and bells and whistles (electronic mileage and trip computer, etc), the car has been in the shop twice for the air pressure guage idiot light, and a bad ground with the battery. Moreover, I am now noticing a bad ground with the a/c fan regulator (a/c fan increases and decreases when depressing accelerator peddle). This car has the same electrical gremlins as my previous VWs. The car with the 16 inch "eco-squealers" does not feel sure footed over the twisties. Inside the fit n finish (plastic door panels) is not as solid as my 1998 VW Passat nor my 97 Audi Cabriolet. For the extra couple of grand I would look at an off lease Audi A4 or A3.

Since early 2007, I have had the catyletic converter split, front and read brakes replaced, steering column replaced and put on sideways...had to take it back to the dealer. Front axle, compressor, 12 tires...its awful in the snow and ice. Satellite radio died, peeling on the arms and buttons, leak in the sunroof, terrible heating/cooling system...takes forever to heat up. Electrically system messed up and when I try and open the window, it closes, then opens. Numerous other things wrong with it. In just the past 6 months Ive sunk $8000 into the car. The only thing I like is the way it handles on the open road. Im so disappointed with this car and will never buy a VW again.
