This Year's Model Updates:

The radio display and anti-theft system have been updated. A brake-wear indicator is now standard on all models.

Pros:
  • Fun-to-drive, excellent value, functional and comfortable interior.
Cons:
  • Slight turbo lag on four-cylinder models, body rolls through tight corners.

Never had a problem with it. The turbo is certainly sufficient (theres no need for the V6). The only bad thing was the short 2 year warranty. Fortunately this has not been an issue.

Car has multiple problems, not simple wear and tear either. Window fell into door (generic problem) Trunk latch broke Side lamps fell off one day Dome light cracked Oil leak (less than 50k miles)

  • Good car but high maintenance cost - 2000 Volkswagen Passat

I have only 81,000 miles so far and gone through both external and internal CV boots. The worse part about maintaining this vehicle is the recommended replacement of the timing belt at 90,000 miles which will cost over $1000.00. If I had know this before I purchased it I would be driving another car. Better engineering is sorely needed if just for this one part. Be careful when you need new brakes being sure you get the ones designed for VW hat has the wear sensor. Otherwise the "Replace pads" light will come on.

  • DO NOT BUY A VW - 2000 Volkswagen Passat

I loved this car for about the first 15K, and then the car started falling apart. I have 60K on it now, and I have already replaced all 4 air sensors and the catalytic converter. The interior lights go out sometimes and then randomly come back on. This car has been to the dealer on 11 occasions for the check engine light, and then they tell me nothing appears to be wrong. The VW customer service people are worthless, the service centers are full of idiots, and the car is completely unreliable. I do not enjoy paying $30K for a car only to be treated like a complete pee on. This is my first and last VW.

  • Good, but not great - 2000 Volkswagen Passat

This is a great looking car and its a blast to drive. But at 27,000 miles, it blew a head gasket. Then at 40,000 miles the rack and pinion steering was shot. I have had lots of interior bits break. The AWD tears up tires. All said, I cant wait to dump this car, Ill never buy a VW again. The reliability is on par with Ford. But the parts cost more. Ha.

  • Passat is not overly reliable. - 2000 Volkswagen Passat

I decided to purchase the Passat after owning Toyotas and Hondas because it was a sexier car then the 2000 Camry. However, the reliability has been worse then I expected. The cup holders quickly broke, the driver side door latch mechanism totally fell apart, requiring $300 plus in repairs. The VW dealer mechanics continually screw up working on the car. The seat fabric is the most amazing lint brush you ever saw, tightly holding on to every bit of lint and dirt, and some of the interior door handle and dash pieces are covered with thin rubber that has been peeling off and looks terrible. I wont buy another VW.

  • Great Engineering, But Reliability? - 2000 Volkswagen Passat

With 34,000 behind me, Im suffering through a love/hate relationship with my first VW. The car has had numerous repairs - emmisions gear; airbag sensor; overhead lighting console. The ceiling was dismantled to fix a rattling sunroof assembly. Numerous rattles. The latest killer was replacing the coolant pipe and pump - a 2 DAY SERVICE JOB! Unaccepatble on a $27k car. But when its running smooth its a gem. Notice I said WHEN.

Nothing but PROBLEMS and expensive maintenance. Serious problems: engine coils failed (recall), replaced a power window motor in 1st yr, computer problems at 20k, $800 brake caliper at 45k (dealer couldnt believe it - "very rare"), check engine light at 60k - dealer said we might have to replace the engine!. Fit and finish problems included loss of interior molding over curtain airbag and broken trunck latch, armrest and cup holders due to flimsy contruction. Simple light bulb replacement for A/C panel - dealer suggests not to fix due to cost of removing dashboard!

I love driving this car. It handles well and is the perfect size for me. But...I its been pretty high maintenance. So far the fuel injectors have been replaced while still under warranty (whew!). The front brakes have been replaced and the most recent and most expensive repair was for the drivers seat heater which burned out.
