This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Fun, Not Perfect - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

My 01 Wolfie has also experienced problems with squeeks and rattles pretty much from day one. Dealer tried, couldnt fixem. Oddly enough, they have slowly gone away now. With 15000 hard miles the car seems to be getting better. Engine runs strong, tranny nice and tight, suspension still tight, but not harsh. The remote trunk release failed at 10000, but the dealer fixed it under warranty. No other problems to report. Basically, a really fun car, but still has the "econo-box" feel. It is not an expensive car, and it should not be expected to make you feel like it is. It doesnt. Only thing in common with my BMW is white paint.

  • Love my TDI - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Ive owned my TDI since July of 2000. It was purchased specifically for the gas mileage and I have not been disappointed. We have a condo in St. Augustine, FL and I made it there from my house in southern NJ on a tank and a half of fuel ... 52 MPG. I never get less than 42 MPG with this car. Only problems with this car have been the front windows suddenly falling into the door (recall), a mass air sensor going (recall), and this car eats brake light bulbs. Unlike a lot of the reviews I think the front cup holders are great and was disappointed that the new Jetta deleted them along with the adjustable armrest. Looking forward to buying a new Jetta Sportwagen TDI.

  • Great Car with some squeaks and rattles - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I have put over 60,000 miles on my Jetta and I still love it. It has been a great car. My main issue was with the build quailty. It seems like there were a lot of small issues originally and I have had squeaks and rattles the entire time, and they come and go through the years. My window went out, but that was a recall, and my rear brakes did need to be replaced at about 30k, so I guess i did notice what the majority of people did, but i have not had O2 sensor or ignition coil problems ( although the ignition coils were a recall too) I love it, its a great car to drive. I would buy another one, although I think i would fight for an extended warranty.

  • Beware of the service department - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The best all-around compact sedan for $20,000: Faster than most small cars, good fuel economy for such a powerful car, handles good but doesnt ride harsh, very good interior quality and ergonomics (besides the cupholders), and a long list of standard features. Of course nothings perfect: Quiet cabin helps rattles from the dashboard and doors sound more prevalent(door rattles can be dispatched by wrapping electrical tape around the "U" shaped door latch). Service departments are lousy. This has been verified by numerous owners around the country.

  • 2001 VW Jetta GLX - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I Bought this car from an induvidual for 13K , with 47,000 miles on it . The car was in outstanding condition . Having heard the horror stories of reliability , I purchased a 4 year Extended Warrenty with unlimited miles. After six months Ive not had any troubles what so ever . The cup holders do block the CD player ,the break pedal sits just a hair to high , and on uneven roads the dash around the cupholder rattle the slightest bit . The car is a blast to drive , and the interior is beautiful . The inerior is on par with the Audis and BMWs Ive seen . The Leather Seats are beautiful . Braking is great. I get 24\25 MPG on the hwy , and 19\21 in down , thats with correct tire pressure .

  • Paid off early & driving it till it dies - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This was my first "new car." Beyond paying too much for it, the car eats oil on the order of 1qt every 3- 4k. "Its designed that way." is the best description multiple VW dealerships around the country say, and is echoed by the national reps even after putting synthetic in it from day one at the recommended intervals (10k). I add & monitor it every 3-4 times I fill up. After 150k it has a unique "drone" at the 3800 RPM. My repairs have been the standard wear items (brakes, timing belt, CV boot). The car requires unique VW tools to do some of the most basic jobs (like rear brakes). Several recall items - mostly electrical. Insurance and repairs are typically higher for VWs.

  • JUNK - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

When I purchased "Molly", I was hooked! Great style, fun to drive, so much spunk and personality!!! I was obcessed with her... washing, waxing, birthday parties, "doctors appts." (scheduled maintenance.THEN.... my ignition coil blew, my computer system blew, my power windows broke, my air conditioning broke, my brake lights went out, my brake rotors rusted out, and my "premium BBS wheels"... are splitting and peeling (due to my climate I am told). However, I can replace for 560.00 EACH! Yeah, right. Did I mention this was all in 3(!) months and my warranty ran out?? Shes on her way now to the Honda dealership to find a new home!

  • Love it! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought this car used with 60,000 miles on it. I fell in love with it right away! It drives wonderfully, great sound system, and the previous owners added some upgrades. Unfortunately after putting about 500 miles on it the check engine light came on and it kept popping itself out of gear. I took it to the dealer and found I needed a new transmission. They were completely helpful. They towed the car, diagnosed it, and put in a new tranny all for free. I still love this car, its fun to drive and nice to look at.

  • 20001 Jetta Wagon - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I am very pleased with to car overall. The car has a smooth comfortable ride and is very dependable. The only thing I don,t like about the car is the fact that when we put our babys car seat in the back, you have to put the front seat up close to the steering wheel to fit it in.

  • Good with Warranty - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I purchased my Jetta GLS new in 01. I loved the car for the first three years (while it was still covered under its factory warranty). Since then Ive had a turbo hose blow, brake switch go three times, replaced two timing belts, and had to replace several emissions sensors. I love the car, but HATE the repair cost. I cant go in for a repair for less than $250 (average $550). So unless you drive a TON the gas savings doesnt make up for the repair cost. Also, mechanics are few, even at the dealers, so you may have to wait for Bob to come back from vacation to get your car back. The timing belt is a $cow$, it wears out quick and then the car needs several adjustments to get it running right again. Overall this is a good car, I just wish I had gotten the extended waranty. I am looking to replace my car soon due to the high cost of repairs.
