This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen eliminates the GLX trim level for wagons -- this means that those who prefer the VR6 engine to the 1.8T engine will have to stick with the sedan. As a consolation, GLS wagons equipped with the 1.8T are eligible for a premium package, which bundles traditional GLX content like power seats, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, wood interior trim and a trip computer. Additionally, VW has made the 1.8T available on both the GL sedan and wagon. GLs now have power windows and mirrors, cruise control and a CD player, while the GLS gets a standard sunroof and alloy wheels. All Jettas are available with stability control (ESP), heated seats and the Monsoon sound system. Other changes include a ULEV rating for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, redesigned cupholders and backlit buttons on the standard stereo head unit.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom.

  • My Jetta - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

I just bought this car and it is awesome. I have it fully loaded except for the leather package. The sports package is definitely worth it. The car is glued to the road even at high speeds! I love it so far.

  • The Jetta is PIMP! - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had the Jetta for about 10 months now, and I have greatly enjoyed the time spent with it. It is a very comfortable car with nice styling. The engine has good power (making more torque than the V6 @ lower RPM). The engine also responds well to modification and gets pretty darn good gas mileage. I get about 24-26 city. The rear seat room is a little small, but it IS a compact car after all. Also the build quality and the materials used are top notch. I have always driven American cars until this one, and it has impressed me greatly.

Ive only had this car for about 8 months but Ive already tested its reliability. Ive been in two car accidents and both times it was the fault of the another. But the damage done to my car compared to the damage done to the other was unbelievable! One car hit me and her car was totaled and my bumper was slighty cracked and there wasnt even any frame damage. The car is built very well and much better than past models. My only complaint is where the drink holder is, it blocks the radio. Other than that highly recommend this car.

  • Overall great - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Overall, a great car, bought in 10/1999. Had the mass airflow sensor problem, window guides problem, and too low to the ground(front end) problem. Other than that, excellent car. Cant beat the mileage and build quality. Had one accident on right firewall, and still no squeeks and rattles!!!! Maybe the newer models have inproved some things, but hard to do.

i thought i was buying a reliable car. i had heard great things about vws and jettas. test drove my car and thought everything was fine with it. boy was i wrong. my car has been in and out of the car dealership getting things fixed. my stero has stopped working twice, my console broke, my rearview mirrors do not work, my brakes jerk when i stop (even when it is not wet) and my car shifts really hard and jerks. also, the service where i purchases my car is not good. i keep telling them the problems and they keep telling me nothing is wrong.

  • TDI all the way - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

My TDI is great because I drive 30,000 miles a year! It did have a transmission defect at 3,000 miles which promted VW to replaced the entire transmission. VW made the best of a bad situation but the dealership was horrible, never goto Congressional! The best thing about the TDI diesel is I use a type of diesel fuel called Bio- Diesel. Its diesel fuel made from vegetable oil, the kind I use is soy based. Its not very well know that this exists because of limited availability but I can switch back to dyno-diesel (regular diesel) if Bio- Diesel is not available. The TDI will run on Bio-Disel with no modifications to the car.

  • All great but Monsoon - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This auto fills my needs for a civilized econobox and exceeds my every expectation except for the MONSOON radio package. The sound system is tuned for rock and country, not classical music. The AM section is weak and I must rearange the balance controlls when switching to and from AM. Did someone slip me a Delco when I was not looking? Had I known it would be this bad, I would have opted for no radio at all and gone aftermarket. It seems that I will wind up doing that anyway. The Monsoon, at least the one I received, is grossly overrated and I would not recommend it. Go with the standard unit, it cant be much worse.

  • I love my GLI, but ... - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I dont understand why the GLI doesnt have steering-wheel controls for audio like the GLX. I had them in my last Jetta, a 2001 GLS 1.8T manual. I moved UP to the GLI, which has more horsepower and is still manual, but now i have to reach to change tracks and manage one extra gear, too! It doesnt make sense. Also, I loved my 2001 cupholders that tucked away into the dash. Stupidly, VW redesigned them, putting a bottom in them, thus ruining the original bottomless design. I HATE my console cupholders - they are practically under the emergency brake. NOTE: your cupholders ranked a 2 in the survey.

  • fastest car I ever owned - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Mines tornado red with black leather, moonroof, monsoon, the whole shebang, I think. I know the point of the GLI was performance, but I must, having had 2 Passats and a New Beetle, I miss the trip computer and fog lights. Still, its quick and agile, and the sport seats are comfortable. Its a nice car and it kicks butt!
