This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Anyone need a transmition? - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

22,000 miles and we are on the 3rd transmition. It has been in the shop for a total of 27 days over the past two years.

This is a great car in general, but I would strongly advised you of some major problems. Take the leather interior, the black material seats will leave you spending hours a week tring to remove the dust that will accumulate on it, and it is extremely hard to remove. Also pay the extra for the 1.8 liter or TDI or even better VR6 cause the regular model is slow, slow slow!!! You will be disapointed it has no power. If I would have to do it all over I would much rather spend that money or less on other models, like acura or nissan ... But the comfort, the cheap fuel and the style still makes it worht buying!

  • fun to drive! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I use to own a 2003 Honda Civic but this 2001 Volkswagen owns it! to my surprise when I had my foot on the accelerator it was fast! and I could surpass any cars even the high end cars. Im also glad for the fact that the brakes are fast and sensitive. I didnt expect much from it and now I enjoy riding it so much! Since I just bought this car, Im still figuring out some stuff to it, because EVERYTHING is automatic even to the fact that almost everything has buttons to it! Another thing thats great about this car, is the comfort of it, when youre in it, its like youre sitting in an SUV because the seats are so elevated.

  • Jetta TDI - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought the Jetta TDI about a year ago, and have not been sorry. In terms of reliability and ergonomics, it was and is the hands down winner in its class. I get about 39MPG in mostly highway driving, which is slighly less milage then the advertised 41 highway. Bottom line: spend the extra $$$ and get the Jetta!

I was in love with VWs, so I bought it. Ive had to replace a lot of things, and the check engine light is still on, but it runs and gets me where I need to go. Talk about the soul of a VW! It dies almost every day when I get home from work, but never at a stop sign or light or anything like that, just when its home. Its really fun, but too expensive and has too many little things go wrong with it. Advice to first time buyers : get the timing belt done right away. Dont wait til it breaks. If theres a check engine light on, dont expect it to be nothing. Get it checked out! These cars are the best around if you have the money and time to maintain them all the time. Id suggest a Honda!

  • not bad - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

NICE, FUN LITTLE SPORTSCAR. THE TURBO IS GREAT, AND HANDLES GREAT. MY JETTA SEEMS TO HAVE A HARD TIME STARTING IN THE COLD AND THE SEATS AND NOT THAT COMFORTABLE. OVERALL, I CANT COMPLAIN.

  • great when no problems! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I love my Jetta when Im not having problems with it. As others have experienced---air flow sensor, ignition wiring, that nasty goop coming from the doors, moon roof pan, and the front window clips have been replaced 3 times!!! Not to mention, the battery, and rear brakes being done at 20K miles. Im at 38K miles and I havent had to replace the tires yet!!! Biggest complaint with this model is the aerodynamics. The first time I rolled the rear windows down on the interstate, I thought I had a flat...the sound is absolutely deafening....something I was unaware of and the dealership didnt tell me about. So you cant roll down the rear windows.

  • Not a bad car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this older car to get around town and to go back and forth from the train station mainly. Its cute and fun to drive, but just a couple of months after purchasing needed work, which the mechanics I took it to had trouble spotting. Getting it fixed has been a hassle, but thats often the case with any car.

  • Cool - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Attended a seminar where J Mays, the designer for Audi & VW cars showed the passion that went into the design of the Jetta (and the awesome switchblade key) and decided to get one. The car has tremendous power and good handling except for the occasional torque steer from the heavy VR6. Interior details are magnificient and one just has to see them to realize that someone spent time thinking about it. It is truly a drivers car.

  • 2.5 Year Evaluation of Manual TDI GLS 01 - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had the car during 2 St. Louis winters. Both times the fuel has frozen. The first year I didnt use any diesel additive. The 2nd yr I used plenty, but it still failed. The dealer told me that it was bad fuel, luckily I bought the fuel from Quik Trip and the guarantee there fuel. They paid for it. So I am still unsure about the condensate theory. Now (60000) it needs a timing belt, new rear brakes, and it looses power at 2400 RPMs. I inquired at the dealer the cost Timing Belt=500.00, Power problem =300.00 to 1200.00. I am disappointed at the high cost to maintain this $21,000 vehicle. I love the performance, driving, and styling of the Jetta.
