This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

I have had my Jetta 1.8T for about 2 years now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a smooth, comfortable ride, responsive handling, attractive styling, excellent efficiency for the power output, and attractive styling for a relatively low price. The Audi components under the hood make I feel Ive got a base A4.

  • Nothing but problems - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I really want to love this car, but I just cant. Its been nothing but problems for me. Ive been to the dealership 9 times for repairs in 16 months. Twice for engine problems, the rest for stupid stuff like cup holders that wont pop out, stuck glove box door, doors making noise while driving, etc. Its a great looking car, and has such a great feel to it. Like I said, I really want to love it, but everytime I start to, something else breaks. Judging from the reviews posted here, Im not the only one with these problem.

I cant say enough about the VW Jetta. My car is equipt with the sports suspension and the 5 speed. I forgot how much fun driving could be. The car handles as a car priced in the mid $30s. For a sport suspension the ride is not rude but you do feel the road. Anything lost in the ride catagory is more than made up in the handling. The interior is laid out wounderfully if you like a driver orientaded car. Materials are first rate for the compact class then some. Makes the back roads to work worth the extra time.

Love this car. Great performer. The dealer was excellent and easy to work with.

  • I LOVE MY JETTA - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

For a 4 cylinder its got some pep, but I wish I had splurged, because I know the 1.8 has some kick. But I love my Jetta, and wouldnt trade it for the world. The leather/cold weather(heated seats...) package are worth the price of the car altogether, not to mention the reliability. All of our friends are jealous even a year later. Those Germans know what they are doing.

This is a great car to drive. Its handling is amazing, the turbo is great, and the mileage is right on the mark. The seats are comfortable and unlike old VW diesels, this one makes it through tough midwest winters without a qualm starting.

  • Very Disappointed - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought my VW Jetta new in 2001. Its beautiful and fun to drive, but NOT RELIABLE! I have been in the shop many, many times in the almost 6 years I have had it. Electrical problems, power window problems, console and seat breaking easily. The repairs werent extremely costly, but MANY! Its too bad such a nice and attractive car has been such a pain when it comes to repairs. I am going to trade it in for something else. I am tired of seeing my VW repair guy.

  • This car is NO GOOD - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This is my first - and last - Volkswagen. My 2002 Jetta had constant issues after 15,000 miles. So far the power windows have stuck down, I have had the radio replaced twice, the brake switch out (that was fun - driving with no brake lights for who knows how long), it has had constant battery issues since I bought the car (I have replaced it three times already and still have to keep a jump starter in my car for the inevitable 2-3 times per month that I need it), the seat heater shorted out - be careful - it will burn you, the center console is broken, and the passenger seat has coughed up two springs so far (my dealer says its no big deal). The inside looks nice - but Im constantly having little plastic pieces breaking off - and Im pretty careful with my car. Avoid this car.
