This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • Water Leaks Galore - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This is my second Jetta in the last 4 years due to severe water leaks on the inside of the car. The first was so severe that I had to lease a new Jetta. The same problem has happened twice now to the same car. The water has damaged the carpets and created an awful mold smell in the car. Volkswagen will not acknowledge that this is a problem. Never happens when the car is driven. Only when sitting in one spot overnight.

Ilove my new car! It was the best choice I have made. The rid is awsome! Everyon compliments me on how cute, but perfessional looking it is. The price was right, too! I am proud to be a VW Jetta owner!

  • 2002 GLS 1.8T 5A - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

In my opinion this car is the best vehicle for the money. Although it can accommodate 5 the Jetta is most comfortable for 2. The rear seat leg room is tight. The 1.8T is the engine of choice for performance (180 HP Stock/210 HP chipped). The interior is well laid out with the exception of the cup holder. The cup holder opens up covering the radio controls. 2003 1/2 will introduce console cup holders similar to the Passat.

  • VW Lemon - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This is my 2nd VW and it is a lemon. Before you buy a Jetta read all of the information on the internet. My car has had numerous electrical problems. The engine coils have been replaced. The transmission has been replaced...I could go on. I have alway loved the handling of VWs, but they are not reliable. To make my situation worse VW will not fix my car, because they claim I have broken it -- even though they have sent service advisories regarding the oil pump on 1.8Ts.

  • Scared to drive after warranty expires - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Ive brought this car in for warranty realted work 3 times now. Once for ignition coil failure, once for the side mirror knob falling off, and once for power window failure. The service dept at my dealer is very hard to get in touch with. Always very busy and pushing me aside. The car is fun to drive, yes, but I cant handle the lack of reliability. Ill be unloading this within 6 months as the warranty nears an end.

  • Great Car / few problems - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Great Car, 45-50 mpg w/ or w/o AC at highway speeds (65-80. The anti-pinch on the windows are a little touchy, I had the windows tinted, dealer said that it could cause windows to detect a pinch and go back down.
