This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

Very impressive vehicle for $24K. Fast and more fun to drive than my 99 Audi A4 2.8.5spd!

This car is nothing but a problem. The service department is always full so it is just not me having problems. I have had this car over a year and I will list a few of its problems: Air Condition broke, Drivers side window fell out TWICE, speakers broke, brakes went bad after 5000 miles, sunroof broke, interior lights broke and there are many more. Im warning you DONOT buy this car.

I have had this vechile for about 18 months. I have had to have the transmission worked on twice and it is still slipping. The power windows never seem to work right and tend to fall down when you are trying to close them. I am very disappointed in this car. If i wanted to purchase a car that was this faulty i would have bought a cheaper one. I love the way this car looks and the way it handles, when the transmission isnt slipping, but i wish i had known about these problems prior to spending $26,000 +.

Ive been a big fan of the Jetta, but more so, the awesome VR6 engine; when I heard that VW was upping the hp from 174 to 200, I was at the dealer asap. Ive only had the car for one day, but Im in love already. This new VR6 engine really has a lot of pull power w/ no hesitation whatsoever (1.8T). The build quality feels BMW/Audi-esque and the suspension is just right. If it was any stiffer, the ride would be too jarring -- I am willing to sacrifice some performance for some ride quality. I cant wait until VW puts out the Jetta/Golf RSi....

We have been very dissatisfied with our 2000 VW Jetta. We bought the top of the line Jetta because we thought we would have it forever, but are selling it in less than two years. Broken things have included: sunroof (got stuck open and pieces began falling out), cup holder, six changer CD player, left back door wouldnt open, front grill pieces. Malfunctions include: mass air flow system, electronic power control, emmissions system, and engine problems.

Ive owned my jetta gls for almost 2yrs. Never had any major problems. However i bought the cloth interior and it is HORRIBLE. Every piece of lint sticks to it and its really difficult to clean. Spend the $ for leather. Its not a very quick car, if you want something fun, this is not the car for you, something pratical, then yes. Im thinking of buying something with a little more power. 115 horsepower is pretty minimal. Cute car for a first time driver.

I love this car. I have put 85,000 miles on it in about two years. I change the oil, rotate the tires and it keeps on running. Ive had ZERO problems out of this baby. I routinely get 50 mpg! With gas prices at $3.00/gallon, why wouldnt you want this car. Its fun to drive, peppy and has great fuel economy.

  • What is the matter with Volkswagen - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

We purchased our 2002 Jetta due our past experience with owning several prior to this. The car has given good gas mileage, but has recently started to burn oil. We have had to have front windows repaired and the passagers seat repaired. Volkswagen feels that burning a quart of oil per 1,000 miles is acceptable. We are going to get rid of this car as soon as possible, before anything else goes wrong. Transmition started to jump on cold mornings. Dealer says transmition is compensating. What ever!! Alot of rattles. Too bad, we really wanted to like this car.
