This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • TDi 2002: Good value - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

We went looking for a mid-sized car with better gas mileage than our SUV (we had 2 4x4s in the driveway). Of all the competitors (according to an Edmunds search), the VW TDi was a surprising option. The turbo diesel in this little 4 cylinder is very surprising. Though not a sport car, the performance is good enough to give the feel and handling of a sport model while still providing a lot of room for a family and the mileage usually limited to a hybrid. Very good buy as well!

We get 47 avg. MPG in combined city/highway driving and 52-53MPG at steady freeway driving speeds. The engine is the best part of the car! Not a slow car by far and comfortable ride for a small car. Only knock is the fit and finish quality of some of the parts. The paint on the interior door handles flaked off for instance and VW does not stand behind this kind of problem, rear seat split on seam and VW also almost balked on this! Outside paint clear coat is peeling in a couple spots. Car itself is solid however so I feel these issues are comparitively minor.

  • My Dream Come True - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

As far as I can remember, VW has always been a part of my life. I grew up with a 77 Bug. At 16 years old, my first car was an 82 Rabbit convertible, and now, at 23, I drive a 2002 Jetta GLI. This is my realistic dream car - affordable, yet undeniably awesome! It is everything I could want - power, looks, comfort - all neatly packaged on 4 17" wheels. If you are planning to purchase a new sedan, you owe it to yourself to test drive a Jetta GLI first.

  • VW LEMONED ALL 3 I BOUGHT!!! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

The car was a nice idea but VW did not work out the bugs & know it. I had 3 1.8t Jettas--each one was a replacement provided for me. My probs consisted of the car dying w/hard braking, the battery being dead for no reason at random times, carbon build up in the engine, cracked turbo coils, ignition coil problems, etc. The dealer treated me as though I had NO idea what I was talking about & I didnt know how a car should run. Being a mechanical engineer and my senior project was to DESIGN & BUILD a car I felt I knew enough. 87 trips to the dealership over 1.3 years they bought the 3rd car back. STAY AWAY.

Both Front Windows have broken, the mass airflow sensor went on me, the sunroof broke, the dash lights flicker, and the car burns oil...if you like paying mechanics then buy this car!

  • This Car Saved My Life... - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Last week, I was hit by another car on the freeway and my car wentnto a tree at 65mph. Airbags deployed, seat belt pulled us back into the seats, engine dropped to prevent driver/passenger crushing, front end absorbed the shock, hazard lights went on automatically and the door locks released. We opened the doors, stepped out and WALKED AWAY with a few minor bruises, abrasions and a sore shoulder & neck. Unfortunately new OR used Jetta TDI GLS Wagons are as scarce as hens teeth, but we purchased a 2003 Jetta TDI GLS Sedan yesterday to replace our totalled Wagon. That car saved my life. Thank- You Volkswagen...

I have a base engine in my Jetta. However, that does not diminish its performance. Its very responsive. I like its handling and and I am very happy that I bought a Jetta.

  • Get There Cheap and Quickly - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I love this gas sipper. I was able to drive from Easter North Carolina to Eastern Texas on less than 2 tanks of fuel with at total cost of 40.00. I averaged just over 50 mpg at 78 mph. The ride was so comfortable that I had to set the timer on my watch to remind me to stop and stretch. It was a rather enjoyable experience. I have had no mechanical problems what so ever.......I love my Jetta. It is much quicker, faster and much more comfortable than I could have ever imagined.

  • Never Again! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Two years ago when I bought my Jetta, I loved it... a few months later I realized what a mistake I made getting rid of my old car. Ive had it in for problems, which seem to keep recurring. Twice in less than a year the engine indicator light and the temperature light have come on due to problems, a headlight, two brake lights, and a blinker light all have been out, a new tire and not to mention the window that wouldnt go up. Its one thing after another.

  • bling, but your bnk acct it will clean! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This car was fun to drive until the relationship degenerated to the point I cringed ever time I had to start it, fearing something else would break. If I werent able to complete most repairs myself, Id probably have spent 5-8k in repairs. All the usual problems—bad ignition coils, 3 radios, window regulators, broken keyfob, multiple wheel bearings (as in 7 or 8 of them), various failed switches, broken glovebox door, broken center console latch (x5) & antenna. In addition, I had 3 airbag system component failures (which I couldn’t fix myself and cost $$$) and a wheel vibration issue that nobody could resolve. I gave up at 79k because I knew the plastic waterpump impeller was on borrowed time
