This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen eliminates the GLX trim level for wagons -- this means that those who prefer the VR6 engine to the 1.8T engine will have to stick with the sedan. As a consolation, GLS wagons equipped with the 1.8T are eligible for a premium package, which bundles traditional GLX content like power seats, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, wood interior trim and a trip computer. Additionally, VW has made the 1.8T available on both the GL sedan and wagon. GLs now have power windows and mirrors, cruise control and a CD player, while the GLS gets a standard sunroof and alloy wheels. All Jettas are available with stability control (ESP), heated seats and the Monsoon sound system. Other changes include a ULEV rating for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, redesigned cupholders and backlit buttons on the standard stereo head unit.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom.

  • Jetta GLS 1.8T 5M - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

The Jetta is fun to drive, it scored very high in the IIHS crash ratings. Who else gives you a side curtain airbag. VW Dealers in the Chicago area suck! I had to go out of state for a good lease. I have the optional sport pack and the car handles great with the 17" tires. $250 for the ESP stability package that its a bargain! The Jetta gives you alot of value for the money. Check out the crash ratings on VW competitors, except for the Honda Civic, they suck! Great car for the class. Cup holder designed in the middle of the dash is terrible!

I bought my car new in 2003. I have had no problems out of it thus far. I love the get up and go of the turbo. Even though it is turbo, the gas mileage does not suffer. I get at least 30 mpg. It is fun to drive and economical. It is also the third VW that I have owned. It is probably all that I will ever own.

  • A Real Treasure - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

After getting a doctorate in late model car shopping my wife and I thought we were just too picky - until we stumbled upon our shiney black 1.8T Jetta with tan leather interior, monsoon sound, and sunroof. Im sorry but this thing is Fine! A vacation on wheels! The Jetta is safe, peppy, wellbuilt, classy, great looking, and more fun with every mile...(just like my wife!)

  • The Good and the Bad - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Love the tiptronic transmission in my 2003 Jetta Wolfsburg! It makes driving an automatic almost as much fun as driving a stick. It is great on fuel and has awesome handling. It is amazing how much power you get out of that little engine. The low end torque from the smaller turbo unit almost makes you forget its a 4-cyl. However, the worksmanship is pretty bad. The paint and windhshield scratch too easily. The paint has swirl marks everywhere. The VW CD player just doesnt sound good, its missing a certain clarity to the sound. I replaced the head unit, but kept the Monsoon speakers...which sound GREAT! Some fabric came loose on the passenger seat and a rear seat came off its hinge. Also, my trunk is getting so stiff that I can barely open/close it. This is a great car, too bad its made in Mexico.

  • Check out the Jetta GLI - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Looking for the fully loaded Jetta GLX but dont want to spend the money? The GLI is more reasonable priced than the GLX and the amenities you "sacrifice" are downright frivolous. Who needs power seats? Who needs the tint on the review mirror to adjust automatically for glare control? Shoot, this car has everthing you need, for less money than the GLX. Weve only had the car for 1 week, and most of the "nods" we get are from other VW owners! That should count for something!

I had bought this car thinking that it was going to be the greatest thing. Engine is perfect, handling is so so, but the reliability is pathetic. I have had for 1 1/2 years and have had it in service 11 times.

  • Great car - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

I have this car with leather package, cold weather package, monsoon package and esp. I would say that with 12,000 miles on my car the seats are still a little stiff. The car handles and corners great and is easy and fun to drive.

  • Needs a bit more reliability - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Im mixed on my Jetta; Im impressed with certain aspects, but sorely disappointed with others. On the good side, the 1.8T motor is a perfect match for the car - its no speed demon, but its perfect for passing on the freeway. The interior is simple, non-gimmicky and pleasing. On the down side, the car has been in for non-scheduled maintenance nine times in the first four years Ive owned it, including the common broken window regulators and ignition coils. Also, the body roll during cornering and pitch during hard braking is ridiculous, because the springs are too soft. Some people say it handles like a sports car, but Im not sure what theyre comparing it to.

  • Love my TDI - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Although I have only had the vehicle 3 months, I grow more fond of it each day, getting 44mpg, turning heads all the time, hands like a dream, fun!!
